User :   I had a back injury a year ago that has left me with nerve damage from lower back into groin, hips, and legs. I have not been able to do normal daily activitys for a year now due to severe nerve pain. My doctor put me on gabapentin 2 weeks ago Im on 1800 mgs. a day, but there is no change in pain level. Dose it just need more time to work, or is it just not going to work?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :
you seem to be suffering from a chronic issue
User :   Yes
Doctor :
since the damge is of nerve origin
Doctor :
it will take time to get back to normalcy
User :   Has the medicine done all its going to do at this dose
Doctor :
The drug which you are on is
Doctor :
suppose to relieve you of your pain keeping in mind the cause for it
Doctor :   The pain you are suffering from is due to damage to the nerves known as neuropathic pain.
User :   How many weeks before it stops the pain?
Doctor :
There is no such specific time limit cause it depends on the severity of the injury.
Doctor :
has the subsided since you are on that drug?
User :   No not at all. Is there anything else I could try that might work better or faster so I can get back to life?
Doctor :
Gabapentein is a highly specific drug.
User :   Am I on the correct does?
Doctor :   did you consult a neurologist?
User :   Yes. I thought this drug was supose to give some relief within two weeks.
Doctor :
Gabapentin is widely believed to help patients with nerve pain associated with spinal cord injury.
User :   They have stoped at this dose of 1800 daily. But should'nt I have seen some relief by now?
Doctor :   you should have, but as i said it depends on the severity. It might take some time.
Doctor :
In the meantime have you tried Physiotherapy?
User :   How long before I should give up on it going to work?
User :   Im am seeing a doctor currently
Doctor :
Doctor :
it is highly unspecific to tell.Generaly a month or so.
User :   What is the usual dose they give someone with severe nerve pain? Should I be taking more?
Doctor :
It could be only told after thorough physical examination of your condition.
User :   They have just wrote me up with having severe nerve damage and left it at that.
Doctor :   Would you like to go for a second specialist opinion on this for the specificity?
