User :   My son is 10 months old and this morning he was choking on mucus and the day care needed to actually use a manuever to dislodge the mucus. He coughed it up and threw it up but I was worried because this has never happened to him. He actually turned purple and was having trouble breathing. This past week, he has been very tired easily and has been sleeping more (longer naps, etc). He also was shivering the other day but it stopped once we dressed him in a warm fleece outfit. Should I be concerned?
Doctor :   Hi
User :   hello
Doctor :
Does he have any other symptoms like cough, fever?
Doctor :   or breathing difficulty now?
User :   No fever or cough..a slight cough once this morning but not a reoccuring cough. That is why it was very surprising when he suddenly started choking for no reason really. He has not had any trouble breathing today.
Doctor :
Doctor :   Has he been feeding well and is he active other wise?
User :   yes he is very active. The only change we have noticed is that he is tired more easily the past week or so.
User :   Is there anything we can do to prevent that from happening? I worry about when he is sleeping if he chokes
Doctor :   It was probably an isolated event what happened this morning.
Doctor :
But has he had similar problems in the past?
User :   He has always been a baby that spits up a lot. He will spit up sometimes an hour or so after eating. He seemed very gassy earlier this morning before the incident so we gave him Mylicon gas drops which seemed to help.
User :   He also had a bad cough/cold that lasted about 10 days a week and a half ago but it seemed to have cleared up.
Doctor :   Ok.
Doctor :   It is probably not of major concern.
Doctor :
it could have been because of the residual cough and cold that he had.
Doctor :
it will improve.
User :   thanks for the advice
User :   anything I should be on the look out for?
Doctor :
concentrate on giving a good diet
Doctor :   use warm and boiled water.
User :   are there any foods that will make him have more mucus? I want to avoid anything that will make him feel sick
Doctor :
the mucous secretion are related to the dust and allergy and not with the food
User :   oh ok
Doctor :
if he is allergic to any food avoid those
Doctor :
apart from those there are no food restriction
Doctor :
make sure the bed on which he sleeps is kept clean and dust free
Doctor :
this can be done by regular washing of the bed sheet
User :   ok thanks! yes we use dye free/allergy free detergents
Doctor :   that would be great
Doctor :
keep the curtains closed to avoid the dust from getting into the room
Doctor :
if you have plants outside your home avoiding taking the kid there early in the morning or late in the evening
Doctor :
as this can expose him to the pollens and can cause excess mucous secretions
User :   one thing I forgot to mention was that he had a red bumpy type of rash on his back the same day as the shivering episode. it was gone the next morning. do you think he has an allergy to something? we have bushes outside our home but they are snow covered since we are in NH.
Doctor :   it could be because of the fever or may be an allergic episode too.
Doctor :
if that has reduced now do not have to worry now
Doctor :
as fas as possible avoid such exposure at this age in the future.
Doctor :
have you followed/
User :   i will watch to see if he has any other allergic reactions.
Doctor :   that could be good.
Doctor :
but that most probably may be due to the infection it self.
Doctor :
but make sure it is not due to an allergy if he by chance he develops one in the future.
Doctor :
have you followed?
User :   ok thank you
User :   :)
Doctor :
Do you have any other query?
User :   I think I am all set for now :)
User :   thank you for your advice
Doctor :
