User :   Hello Doctor,In early April I was involved in a low risk sexual activity with a man. I developed Knee pain alone on the right side of my knee possibly 3 weeks after this encounter and it went away on its own few days later and shortly after my left knee had the exact same pain but this one lasted only for a day. Now the pain on my right knee is back and is still present until today. The pain is at its worst when I'm waking up then it gets better throughout the day. But is still present. I have a hard time going up and down the stairs but its still bearable.
I'm not trying to scare myself out but I know one of the ARS symptoms of HIV is joint pain but I have heard ARS symptoms don't come one at a time but tend to come all at once in a form of flu like symptom. Should I be concerned? is this related at all or could it be a different diagnosis all together?P.S. I did go hiking in that period with some friends. I don't workout or jog. I thought for a moment this could be related to my hiking trip but the pain started ONE WEEK after my hiking trip.
My right knee seems a bit swollen. Its only noticeable when I compare the two.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated
Doctor :   Hi
User :   hello
Doctor :   Let me read the query
Doctor :   Give me couple of minutes please
User :   thank you
Doctor :   , the most likely reason could be reactive arthralgia
Doctor :   that means there could be a sexual disease which can react with the joints
Doctor :   The other could be hiking and insect bite
Doctor :   In both the case, you need further investigation with certain blood tests
Doctor :   and then course of antibiotic urgently
User :   What is reactive arthraliga? im a bit confused
Doctor :   because of sexual activity
Doctor :   there could be std
Doctor :   STD
Doctor :   sexual transmitted disease
Doctor :   It could be Gonococcal or Non gonococcal infection
Doctor :   These bacteria tend to produce certain antigens which can react
Doctor :   and cause knee swelling and pain
Doctor :   I want to know your age
User :   I'm 25 years old
Doctor :   and Did you have protected intercourse the
User :   It was mostly oral sex but there was a slight slip but I was the inserter. Not more than 5 seconds on two occasions
User :   i was the top
Doctor :   Still it is a high risk
User :   I understand. Although to my understanding joint alone is not a possible ARS symptom or did I get that wrong?
Doctor :   So you need a testing of STD's
Doctor :   It includes VDRL, HSV, ELISA for HIV
Doctor :   Moreover you need to get treated for your joint pain now
Doctor :   If it is infective cause it can be easily treated with
Doctor :   course of antibiotics
User :   I should get tested for STD and not HIV or both?
Doctor :   HIV is also STD
Doctor :   So if you are screening for STD
Doctor :   it involves testing for HIV also
Doctor :   The chances of HIV are low though]
Doctor :   but it is much worth testing in entirety
User :   I guess my question is really whatever im experincing. could it be hiv related or other form of STD?
Doctor :   Most likely an STD
Doctor :   HIV related symptoms usually start after 4 to 6 weeks of exposure
Doctor :   Your symptoms started within week
Doctor :   or two
User :   3 actually
User :   i didnt get flu like symptoms
User :   just this one joint pain
Doctor :   Again, there is also a likely chance of hiking to be the reason
Doctor :   The migrating joint pains suggests a likely infective cause
User :   Alright. I just find it weird the pain started one week after the hike
User :   I will go see my doctor tomorrow
Doctor :   Nothing to worry, what I insist is to get physical examination and course of antibiotiics is needed
Doctor :   You will be alright soon
Doctor :   Please describe the entire history to your Doctor
User :   One more question regarding HIV please. for my own education purpose
User :   When the ARS symptoms appear , can you just get one such as rash and not the other stuff or do they come all together and leave all together?
Doctor :   Rash most probably is not ARS
Doctor :   It is likely to be a bacterial infection
Doctor :   Tick bite while hiking
User :   Its just a general question regarding the ars symptoms. do they come all together or can you just get one and not the others?
Doctor :   Just one or one at a time
Doctor :   You are young and can easily respond to antibiotic course
Doctor :   Always have protected intercourse
Doctor :   Please do not involve in sex with unknown
User :   Ok, Thank you. I will speak with my doctor. have a good day
Doctor :   Pleasure speaking
Doctor :   Do you have any other questions
User :   no thank you
Doctor :   Please fill the feedback form say done when done
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me
