User :   I have been on Metoprolol for the past 5 days for heart irregularity following aortic valve replacement surgery. I am frightened on becoming dependent on this drug, and would like to gradually discontinue it. Can I do this under doctor's supervision?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Let me read your query
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   You should not discontinue the drug
Doctor :   The drug is given for control cardiac stimulation
User :   Thank. However, I don't want to be on it for life. Is there no way to gradually reduce the dosage under a doctor's supervision?
Doctor :   The indications for the drug are Hypertension, angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction.
User :   I was prescribed it for atril fibrillation.
Doctor :   Antihypertensives are never stopped they are always lifelong medications
Doctor :   These drugs if stopped will cause Rebound hypertension
User :   I was not hypertensive, just had atrial flutter or fibrillation. My BP is in the 130/80 range.
Doctor :   IN atrial fibrillation our treatment lies in controlling Heart rate
Doctor :   Though you dont have Bp
Doctor :   The drug is used to reduce Atrial Fibrillation
User :   I had the Maze Procedure done with my aortic valve replacement - that was supposed to correct the atrial fibrillation. I was not informed that lifelong medication would be necessary.
Doctor :   The both are treated by the same drug and same mecahanism of action blocking cardiac hyperactivity
Doctor :   If there is associated discomfort then lifelong medications are given
Doctor :   Atleast not less than a year
User :   Is it possible to wean off the drug after a year, and perhaps after cardioversion?
Doctor :   Yes if you have no other complaints then they do wean but slowly
User :   Well, that is some good news, anyway. Thanks for that information.
Doctor :   Is there anything else i can help you with?
User :   No, that is all I wanted to know right now. Thank you.
Doctor :   Thanks for consultimg me
Doctor :   Wishing you a speedy recovery
Doctor :   Bye for now
User :   Thanks. Bye.
Doctor :   Have a great day ahead
User :   You, too.
