User :   I was prescribed Methylprednisolone along with antibiotics for treatment of congestion and sore throat (believed to be strep by quick-test). I've taken the first 6 tablets as per instructed over the course of the first day. Now, on day 2 I notice that my congestion is even worse than the first, and I have absolutely no airflow (completely plugged with the feeling of major pressure in the sinuses).
It did not seem that there was a positive effect from taking the oral steroid. So the question: Can this be making my symptoms worse? I did not see such a sideeffect listed, yet figure this is something worth immediately asking.
I also forgot to ask while in the doctor's office how long exactly I should expect the steroid to require to take effect. Is this normal?
Doctor :   hello
User :   Hello.
Doctor :   give me a min, let me go thru your query
User :   Nice to meet you, I assume that my message went through. Ah.
Doctor :   nice to meet you too
Doctor :   may i know your age and gender please ?
User :   So yes, in this case in looking over the information sheet that came with the oral steroid, I simply can't seem to figure these two things out (whether or not this is a possible side effect).
User :   27, male 180 lbs
User :   I'm unable to sleep as well, yet figure this is likely not a sideeffect persay, and probably the blocked breathing.
Doctor :   do you have any other medical condition ?
User :   None, just this cold at the moment. Also no known allergic reactions to medications.
User :   However, I've never taken a steroid before in treatment.
User :   I'd forgotten to ask how long as well a medication like this typically takes to have an effect. I know that alot of medications for say those with Asthma can take upto 48 hours.
User :   Yet no idea if that's the case here or not sadly, hence the concern.
Doctor :   ok well oral steroids do act rapidly and should cause the relief
User :   Alright, then it's either not effective likely, or is actually causing my condition to be worse?
Doctor :   how bad has it gone from day one ?
User :   Day one, one side of the nasal passages were blocked, day 2, completely blocked.
User :   However, it was no better during the time I was taking this medication on day 1.
Doctor :   we usually give a span of 48 to 72 hours for medications esp antibiotics to reach their full efficacy in the body
User :   I did notice other effects, for instance I had a sprained ankle (tier 3 sprain) that never fully recovered.
User :   That, completely no swelling as a result.
User :   Yet it doesn't seem to have done anything yet per the congestion.
User :   It's definitely doing something, however not for the symptoms it were intended to treat.
User :   Is there anything else I can do in the meanwhile to open my nose up?
User :   Or make a better effort to.
Doctor :   sure i will tell you
Doctor :   is the congestion in your throat as well as nose ?
User :   The only place that I actually feel pressure is near the eyes, that and that I can't breath through the nose.
User :   Throat is sore, not sure what you'd mean by congestion in that area (lymph nodes I guess you'd mean?).
Doctor :   Vaporizers are arecommended for relief from nasal congestion, especially when additives such as vinegar or Vicks-style menthol salve are added to the water supply.
User :   Ok, two more things I guess I can ask, since I have them as well.
User :   Is there any conflict with these medications.. Neo-Synephrine and Tylenol PM?
User :   (have not used either, yet have them)
Doctor :   no there is no contra indication between the two medications
User :   Excellent, then I may be able to at least get to sleep with the Tylenol. Thanks again for the help.
User :   Err, one more question per medication conflicts.
Doctor :   no problem
Doctor :   please go ahead
User :   Vicks products you mentioned, VapoSpray - the 12 hour treatment, similar to the Neo-Synephrine yet different active ingredient if I recall.
User :   Does that have any conflict?
Doctor :   you can use one of them as the end result is the same
Doctor :   also for your sore throat
User :   Ok, so one at a time in conjunction with the oral steroid, but don't overlap them.
Doctor :   1) Add lemon juice and some honey, to a glass of hot water. Drink this. It will give immediate relief from pain.
Doctor :   yes no overlapping
User :   Alright, thanks again.
Doctor :   your most welcome
User :   And thanks for clearing that up, I'll continue taking the steroid unless there's some severe reaction.
