User :   My friend has metastatic liver cancer. He went through the first round of Interluken 2 but wasn't strong enough for the second round. He can't keep anything in him and he checked himself into a local hospital while he waits for a clinical trial next week. His liver is enlarged, they said at the hospital. How long do you think he has?
Doctor :   Hi,
Doctor :   User :   Hi Dr
User :   Can you answer my question Doctor
Doctor :   I got the history but can you please redefine your question ?
User :   Given where he is physically now could you tell me how long you think he can survive?
Doctor :   i need some more information on the type of cancer and lymphatic spread
User :   His cancer is Melanoma that spread to his liver
Doctor :   ok, has any lymph node biopsy done ?
User :   I know he had a biopsy done of the liver
Doctor :   ok, well melanoma is one cancer with poor prognosis , with maximum of 5 year survival rate even with treatment
Doctor :   the interleukin make it more symptom free or less symptomatic than extending the life term
User :   He already had Melanoma and then it was cured or so they thought then he got this. I think his survival rate is alot less than that but I don't know
Doctor :   well it also depends on the spread of the cancer and its staging
Doctor :   in general when symptom free and newly diagnosed the survival rate ranges around 5 years
User :   He is at stage 4
Doctor :   the prognosis is worse in stage 4 cases
User :   I guess I'm trying to find out if he has months or weeks
Doctor :   may i know what are his symptoms and when was this diagnosis made ?
Doctor :   so that i can be accurate in coming out with his life expectancy
User :   his symptoms are he can't keep food down that is why we checked himself into the hospital. His creatin level is high, he is constipated and very weak
Doctor :   does he vomit blood ?
User :   I don't know
Doctor :   Has he lost weight in recent days , if yes how much per month ?
User :   he has lost 20 lbs in the last month
Doctor :   ok, When was the cancer diagnosed ?
User :   In December
Doctor :   ok according to the history you provided i could conclude in saying the survival would not be more than 1 to 1.5 years from now
User :   You really think he has that long
Doctor :   a detailed examination and detailed history would have enabled me to be more accurate
User :   thank you
Doctor :   you are welcome
