User :   my 8-year old granddaughter has as white califlower like susbtance that comes out of her right ear- it has a very fowl smell. Her ped just gave her eardrops and said to use to help soften - it will come out in large globs -- she swims almost every day in the summer -- but it actually seems to help loosen all this stuff --- she is always messing with her ear (it itches) -- she doesn't seem to hear well from this ear - I keep telling my daughter I think an ENT needs to look at it and do a culture of the white stuff --- when she was younger she actually had a staph infection in her ear one time --- is this white califlower stuff okay or does she need to see an ENT immediately.
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Dr here
Doctor :   Let me read what you have typed.
Doctor :   Since how long is she having this problem?
User :   she has been having this all summer -- was actually given an antiibiotic in early summer and of course the ear drops to use everyday
Doctor :   Does she have any pain or discharge from it?
User :   hard to judge on pain - the pedictrician said apparently she has a high tolerance for pain because by the time it is noticed that she has an ear infection - it has gotten pretty bad -- discharge - just the white califlower type stuff
Doctor :   Does she have any other symptom? Is the hearing very much decreased?
User :   hearing decrease is very noticeable when it is full of the white stuff - once that is out -- she can hear better but it completley blocks her ear at times
Doctor :   For how long has she been using the ear drops?
User :   since early summer --- probably first to mid-June
Doctor :   It can be due to many reasons as Yeast infection, bacterial infection, otitis externa etc. Since it is foul smelling it seems definitely infection is there.
Doctor :   Also continuous swimming can make it worse.
User :   that is my thinking -- sounds like infection - yes swiming should be winding down now but do you think an ENT should be consulted and a culture done?
Doctor :   I will advise you to get it examined from a ENT specialist as he would examine it by using a Otoscope and also may perform investigations like Tympanogram and audiogram test for hearing problem
User :   that makes sense to me -- thank you
Doctor :   The otoscope will help to analyze the problem and the root cause of it.
Doctor :   Also ask her to avoid touching it now and then.
User :   okay - not touching will be hard since it itches
Doctor :   Ok i know it must be bothering her when it itches.
