User :   Hello Doctor, My mother got knee pain on both legs.. Not able to walk long. The X-ray shows that joint bones got gaps. For this, she has to undergo a surgery to fill the gaps through metal plate of Bone cement. I need to know how long it will persist and whether she can do the normal work like walking on steps. Also please suggest how much cost it will take to go for this surgery on both legs and how long it will take to come normal after the surgery and whats the name of this process. Age: 58 No other diseases like sugar, pressure, Heart attack. Treatment: Just pain killer tablets. -Thanks Ponkali.

Doctor :
Let me read through what you have typed.
Doctor :
The cost of the surgery will depend on the hospital where you are getting the procedure done.
Doctor :
Hence I will not able to comment on that part of your query.
Doctor :
To help you better, may I know what was your mother diagnosed to have?
User :   couldnt get..
Doctor :
Ok.

User :   for more than 3 years..
Doctor :
Ok.
Doctor :   When did she have her last menstruation?

User :   ok
Doctor :   As a women starts to attain menopause the hormones
Doctor :
that are secreted by the ovaries are reduced.
Doctor :
Severe reduction in these hormones can cause osteoarthritic changes to occur.
User :   okey..
Doctor :
Osteoarthritis affects commonly the big joint of the lowerlimbs especially the knees.
Doctor :
I guess that is the reason for the surgery.
Doctor :
This can be treated with surgical treatment if the problem is severe.
Doctor :   Various forms of surgical treatment are available for osteoarthritis.
Doctor :
The one you are speaking of, i guess refers to as osteotomy.
Doctor :
This is a procedure the where there is stabilisation of the bones.
User :   okey..,
Doctor :   This is my guess, as I have not examined your mother and not able to tell exactly what she needs.
Doctor :
However most of the surgeries need hospitalisation atleast for 1 to 2 weeks and further recovery and rehabiltation.
Doctor :
Hence she may have to be on support atleast for 2 to 3 months following the surgery.
Doctor :
This does not necessarily mean hospitalisation for that particular amount of time.
Doctor :
But you may have to visit the hospital for that much of time for rehabilitation atleast.
Doctor :
Have you followed?
User :   Yes Dotor I got. I heard, the fixing with bone cement will take a week to walk.. Is there any possibility like that??
User :   Also can you suggest any hospitals in Erode, Coimbatore, Bangalore?
Doctor :   The best place for bone surgeries at Bangalore will be hosmat hospitals.
Doctor :
I mean Hosmat Hospital.
User :   ok.
Doctor :
And regarding the previous query,
Doctor :
I can only guess what the surgeries could be.
User :   ok
Doctor :
The other surgery where similar things that happen is arthodesis.
Doctor :
Hence you may have to speak to the operating surgeon for the exact details.
User :   Sure Doctor.
