User :   nothing he just prescribed water pills and told me to eat bananas...........i think he was more focused on the ensusing blood test to determine for sure if had diabetes........but he listened to my heart good...............but not said anything...........and i was focused on the diabetes things............too..........i should have asked how my heart sounded
Doctor :   ok
User :   edema is sigin fo heart problem more than not...........i worried maybe kidney disease or something...............but blood test i hope ruled that out
User :   what could be cause of edema
User :   i have empheysa.
User :   could that cause it?
Doctor :
peripheral edema is the sign of water retention
User :   right
Doctor :
the causes are heart disorders
User :   but why not my heart working right?
User :   okay
User :   is it serious
Doctor :   anemia hypoproteniemia
Doctor :   liver disorders and kidney disorders
User :   will it shorten my life span
Doctor :   since you have chronic lung disease in the form of emphysema it will have effect on the heart
Doctor :
and hence i believe the edema is due to haert problem
User :   okay
User :   can it be controlled
User :   can i live normal life
Doctor :
also the edema will not make you to loose the feet
Doctor :   yes you can have normal life and it can be controlled with medications
User :   doctor i am trying to quit smoking so hard............
User :   i do a pack and a half a day
User :   sometimes i just wonder if its too late
User :   i get so discouraged
User :   started 16 years ago
User :   after i had quit for a while
User :   all these problems.............kidney cancer..............lung disease............diabetes..........
Doctor :   already the lungs have reached the stage of emphysema and leading to heart failure
Doctor :   if you continue to smoke it will worsen your condition and will reduce the life span
User :   if i quit now will i live normal life to m aybe 70's
Doctor :
if smoking is quit defenitely there will be improvement in the present condition
Doctor :
and if the diabetes is also controlled that i dont see any difficulty in you crossing 70
User :   what about breating okay
User :   breathing okay
User :   and will diabetes affect my other organs
User :   i took breathing test about 2 years ago and my lung function was not all that bad
Doctor :   it is all because of the emphysema chest and heart failure, quit smoking and water pills will definitely improve the breathing
User :   is my lung function damaged beyond repair
Doctor :
and diabetes will take time to affect the organs since you are in the beginning and that to in the borderline category, it may take many years for it to show any effect on the organs
Doctor :
emphysema is the diagnosis means yes the damage is beyond repair.
Doctor :
but the fact is
Doctor :
there is adequate lung reserve
Doctor :
so now it should not be damaged
Doctor :   so avoiding smoke will prevent the reserve lung for you to use it for normal function
User :   i am 57 male would you say my health prognosis is worse than most at my age
User :   can i make it to 80 do u think
User :   if i quit smoking
Doctor :   not worst but moderately impaired than the normal at 57
Doctor :   if you quit smoking follow the Doctor advise than you may make it up to or beyond 80 s also
User :   okay
User :   i just worry about all this try to will edema and heart failure be controlled
User :   after i quit smoking
Doctor :
smoking is damaging the lungs
Doctor :   and it leads to impaired oxygenation of the blood
User :   so when i quit it will heal kind of
Doctor :
as well as it impedes the flow of blood in the lungs
User :   and if my heart is not pumping and lost strength is that not a serious problem
Doctor :   this puts more strain on the heart and over a period of time it fails
Doctor :   yes it has lost strength and it is a matter of concern
User :   so really you think i am only moderatley impaired?
User :   how can i ge to my 80's
Doctor :   you have only swelling of the edema of feet is is a sign of beginning of the heart impairment
Doctor :
so only there is moderately impairment
User :   so concern but not panic for me
Doctor :   yes
User :   i can still live normally if i quit smoking
Doctor :
quit smoking as well as need to follow the doctors advise in controlling the diabetes and medicines to provide strength to heart
User :   will it get progressively worse..........the heart..........or stabilize..........and again will edema need medication
User :   to solvie it
User :   or will it get better after i stop smoking
User :   and better diet
Doctor :   yes edema will need the medications
User :   like water pills
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :
and may be other medications as the doctor seems fit at the appropriate time
