User :   Hi ok so Im male, 21, gay and sexually active. I recently recieved penatrative anal sex. Im not normally passive and therefore hurt so we stopped. We used protection, since then I have had a bruised spincta, and it has been difficult to pass solids. Tonight I went to the toliet and passed a solid which had a alot of white mucus on in. More mucus on the rectum end than the intestine end... if you know what i mean. My anus is not only a little sore (however alot better) but it is now ichy. Not majorly ichy but ichy. - I have had no blood - no discharge. Is is an sti or infection - Im on holiday in the us from the uk at the mo so i dont know what I can get over the counter to help... please help XXXXXXXX x
Doctor :   hi
Doctor :
please let me read it.
User :   thats cool
Doctor :
is there any other symptom associated along with the mucus with stools?
Doctor :   is there bleeding associated?
User :   no bleeding
Doctor :
ok
Doctor :   after how long a gap after the anal intercourse did you notice the mucus appearing?
User :   well i only noticed the mucus yesterday and the intercorse was wednesday night. But i have not been looking untill i saw a significant amount yesterday
Doctor :
ok
Doctor :
is the mucus coming out only when you pass stoools? or is it present at other times also?
User :   I have had a look and there doesnt seem to be an visable difference to my anus apart from being a bit red
Doctor :
ok
Doctor :
passing mucus in stool often indicates that there is inflammation of the intestines.
User :   right ok...
User :   so that has nothing to do with the intercorse i had then?
Doctor :   apart from the STD's, there are other causes that can result in mucus production
Doctor :
since you said that protection was used, the chances of STD are minimal
Doctor :
so what we are left with possibilities that need further investigations
User :   ok
Doctor :
and the possibilities include:Ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, Celiac disease, and Diverticulitis
User :   well i feel fine everywhere else, no pain, no upset stomach... nothing
Doctor :   out of these the first 3 can have diarrhea, and might have bleeding associated along with the mucus
User :   just an ichy and sore butt haha
User :   no diarrhea
Doctor :
and the last cause that is diverticulitis, can present with normal stools, and mucus, with no bleeding and at times anal itching.
User :   ok what is diverticulitis?
Doctor :   there might be a burning feeling associated in rectum and colon area
Doctor :
i wil explain.
User :   yep the iching could be discribed as a burning sensation too i guess
Doctor :   Diverticulitis or when diverticulum forms inside the walls of colon, they become infected and sore
Doctor :
resulting in itching, burning and stools with mucus in them
User :   ok that sounds like it could be the problem
Doctor :
the stools need not be watery or very hard, thay tend to be as normal stools
User :   yup
User :   this seems to be ticking boxes
Doctor :
so now, since you are confirming the symptoms, the possibility can be Diverticulitis
User :   inside the rectum it feels like mild burning
Doctor :
this can be confirmed, by a colonoscopy
Doctor :   which will show the diverticulums inside therectum and colon
Doctor :
*the rectum
User :   ok
User :   so is their treatment i can by from the pharmacy?
Doctor :
so i suggest you to meet a gastroenterologist as early as possible
Doctor :   such that the coloscopy can be done to confirm the diagnosis
Doctor :
and then start with definitive treatment
User :   well im on holiday for 2 weeks in the states...
User :   is there anything i can get over the counter here?
Doctor :
well, the OTC drugs wil not help much, you wil need proper treatment since you are having acute symptoms
User :   how could i have contracted this?
Doctor :
however you can follow few of the self measures
Doctor :
to get temporary relief
User :   ok
User :   what are they?
Doctor :
take High-fiber containing foods that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dried beans, peas, and lentils.
Doctor :   Drink plenty of fluids about 10-12 glasses per day to help keep stools soft and prevent constipation
User :   ok so is this an infection?
Doctor :   and keep yourself physically active
User :   ok
Doctor :
its a infection that affects the divertucums that get formed
Doctor :
due to chronic pathology in colon
Doctor :
the mechanism is still not understood fully
Doctor :
one theory that researchers have put forward is of Low-fiber diet.
Doctor :   as the colon needs to put more efforts to push the stool out in the absence of fiber in food.
Doctor :   and this force gives rise to the formation of these pouches kind of things pouches on the weaker regions along and inside the walls of the colon
Doctor :   which are known as diverticulums.
Doctor :
have you followed what i have said?
User :   yup
User :   so is this something that can be easily rectifyed with antibiotics?
Doctor :
so folow the self measures as suggested until you can see a gastroenterologist.
Doctor :
the first line of treatment is medical , and if they do not respond to medicines, or recur, then surgery is teh permanent cure.
Doctor :
to take them out.
User :   what is the likely hood of this having to be surgical...
User :   this is the first time this has occured
Doctor :
the medical treatment includes, fiber suppliments, stool softeners, clear fluids, and pain medications
Doctor :
usually the uncomplicated cases are treateed my medical mangements itself not requiring surgery
User :   does this sound complicated?
User :   haha
Doctor :
and since this is the first time you have had active symptoms, the chances are that you wil recover with the medicines.
Doctor :
but the exact sate can be known only after the investigations like coloscopy
Doctor :
which will enable direct visualisation and hence the sevrity can be noted
Doctor :
and treated accordingly
User :   could it just go away....
Doctor :
no, it will not 'just go away', if left alone, symptoms, might subside, but cancome back with even more severity, needing surgery
User :   ok so i should see someone as soon as possible
Doctor :
have you felt any time these symptoms of bloating, constipation and mild cramps in stomach?
User :   no
Doctor :
yes, you should see a doctor as early as possible
Doctor :
Bloating, constipation and mild cramps are the first symptoms to occur in case of diverticulitis
Doctor :
which later goes on to itching, and mucus and burning in anus symptoms.
User :   ok well i have not had any of these symptoms...
Doctor :   but is also possible not to have any symptoms untill the stools with mucus appear and then the investigations reveal them
User :   could it also be a possiblity that because i am not normally on the recieveing end of anal sex that this is just iritation ?
Doctor :   so please see a doctor for the possible reference to a gastroenterologist
Doctor :
and get the investigations done and start definitive treatment based on the findings
Doctor :
irritation after anal sex, can last for 24 hours, and very minimal mucus, but no itching and burning
User :   ok well thank you x
Doctor :   Is there any thing else I can help you with?
Doctor :   Please fill the feedback form say done when done.
User :   done!
