User:I had unprotected sex and was paranoid so 1 month later I went to get a full std screening. The results were negative for all std's. A week after the test I had burning urination and have had this for 10 days now. I had some doxycycline so I took 100mg a day twice a day for 7 days and still have the burning. Now all of a sudden my girlfriend has pink eye or something like it and I have mild symptoms of it too. Could I have Chlamydia even though the results of the std test was negative?
Let me read your query for few minutes to be able to have a good discussion here.
Doctor:I have gone through your query and understand your concern
Doctor:Yes it is possible to have Chlamydia
Doctor:that is only if the tests you underwent did not test for chlamydia
User:they did test for chlamydia and came up negative
User:but this test was done a week pryor to any burning urination
Doctor:in that case I suspect a new infection
Doctor:not necessarily Chlamydia
Doctor:it could be any bacterial infection
User:are std tests very accurate? are false negatives common?
Doctor:most common bacteria causing urinary tract infection is E-coli
Doctor:False negatives are not very common
Doctor:STD tests are indeed quite specific
User:I have read online that an std test can come back negative if no symptoms were present at the time of the test. Is this true?
Doctor:and I think your eye symptoms and burning sensation are different
Doctor:Generally you would develop symptoms within a few weeks time after the exposure
Doctor:but yes, if you done't have any symptoms then these test can come out as negative even if you have infection
Doctor:that kind of infection is called subclinical infection
Doctor:I would advise you to get a urine routine exam as well as urine culture and sensitivity done again
Doctor:and for the eye symptoms, it is best to consult an eye doctor
User:is it possible for chlamydia to spread to an eye and then be passed to another and they get the infection in the eye?
Doctor:Chlamydia spreads by sexual intercourse mainly
Doctor:it is unlikely to spread by any other mode
User:wouldn't the doxycycline for 7 days kill the chlamydia?
Doctor:Doxycyclin is not a very antibiotic against Chlamydia
Doctor:best antibiotic for chlamydia is Azithromycin
User:can that be taken orally?
Doctor:a single dose of 1gm will suffice
User:what is the recommended dosage?
Doctor:but you will need a prescription to obtain azithromycin
User:I understand
Doctor:it is best to confirm it by urine culture and sensitivity before any treatment is decided
User:How is E-Coli treated?
Doctor:so please get the urine culture and sensitivity along with blood test to look for signs of chlamydia infection
User:Im doing that in 30 minutes so this is why I am asking questions now
Doctor:Best antibiotic against E-coli will be from the group Flouroquinolones
Doctor:that is ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin
User:okay thanks
Doctor:is there anything else I can help you with?
User:I think that's it for now
User:thank you
Doctor:you are welcome
Doctor:have a good day ahead
