User :   I have had diahrrea on and off for about 4 to 5 months now. What could it be?

How many episodes of loose stools do you have per day?
User :   Well, it all depends. IT varies alot. The worst i had was pretty much all day. Then sometimes its only 2 to 3 times.
User :   Ill get it for a week or two and then it will go away for awhile.
Doctor :   In between these spells are your stools normal or do you have constipation too?
User :   Sometimes i will have cramp like symptoms in the mornings but usually during the day im fine. In between my stool is not diahrrea but it still seems really soft

User :   Yes
User :   Most of the time

Have you seen any doctor for the problem?
User :   No i have not

User :   No

Do you smoke or consume alcohol?
User :   I smoke. Occasionally i will have a drink

User :   For the most part yes

Your symptoms may probably be either due to recurrent infections or

may be partly due to irritable bowel syndrome.

You need to get evaluated as the treatment may vary depending on the cause.
User :   What kind of infections. I have had a kidney infection before. Is there any tie to that?

You may need a few tests and a proctoscopic examination for the better understanding of the problem.
Doctor :   It may not be due to the kidney infection.

I am speaking of the infections of the gut. An ameobic infections probably or any other parasitic infections.

The blood tests and stool test may be able to identify it.

Hence I would suggest you to get these done after seeing your local doctors.

1. Drink plenty of water when ever you have the symptoms.

2. You can use sporalac XXXXXXXX during the episodes of diarrhea.
User :   What is that , a medicine?
Doctor :   It is a OTC medications available in the powder form.
User :   ok\

You may have to mix it with warm water and use it.
User :   ok

It is basically to replenish the normal bacteria lost during the episodes of diarrhea.
User :   ok
Doctor :  
This is very essential in preventing dangerous clostridial infections.

4. If the diarrhea are very severe, you may use Tab imodium to stop the episodes.
Doctor :   Have you followed?
User :   I just started taking phillips colon health. It has L. acidophilus, B. bifidum and b. longum in it. Is that the same as the sporolac XXXXXXXX or shoud i just get that?
User :   Yes i understand

A specialist is better, but your regular doctors can help you in getting an appointment faster.

You can directly consult the specialist gastroenterologist without the referral. The only problem you may face is with the appointment getting.

User :   I will occasionally get bad migranes. As far as over the counter medicines what is the best one?

Over the counter medication that are available for the pain relief are tylenol, advil, excerdin.

User :   IS there one better than the other or are they pretty much all the same?

A few other medications that can help for pain relief especially in migraine are prescription drugs.
Doctor :   There are medications that belong to the class of triptans, opioid drugs that are effective for pain relief.

The former medications OTC are equally effective when taken early during the episode of headache.
