User :   recent cbc showed a rdw of 45.6, all other values were within normal range. should I be concerned
Doctor :   hi
User :   hi
Doctor :   RDW shows the distribution of red cells
Doctor :   if it is increased with all other parameters being normal
Doctor :   then it would mean that
Doctor :   new cells have been thrown into the bloodstream
Doctor :   in response to anemia or destruction of old cells
Doctor :   so if all other parameters are fine you need not be worried
Doctor :   was peripheral smear done for you?
Doctor :   if yes, what did the result show?
User :   not that I am aware of
Doctor :   ok.
Doctor :   are you having any symptoms at present?
Doctor :   why was the blood test done?
User :   annual blood work up with renewal of scripts for hypertension and high cholesterol
Doctor :   ok.
Doctor :   is your blood pressure and cholesterol levels under control?
User :   yes
Doctor :   ok. then you do not need to worry about your RDW result
Doctor :   have you followed what I have said?
User :   yes, thanks. Should I have it rechecked sooner than next year?
Doctor :   no, not required unless you develop symptoms suggesting anemia or increased destruction of blood cells
User :   what kind of symptoms?
Doctor :   if you continue to be fine, then get it checked in your next scheduled checkup
Doctor :   symptoms would include tiredness, lethargy, splenomegaly, abdomen pain, purpura, bleeding from gums, easy bruising etc
Doctor :   is there anything else I can help you with?
User :   no thanks, have a good evening
Doctor :   thanks for consulting me. bye for now.
