User :   Hi, I am 47 and have had a dark brown discharge for about 5 days now. I had my period, very light about two weeks ago. How long will this last and should I go to the doctor. I assume this has something to do with perimenapause.
Doctor :   Hi,
Doctor :   Dr
Doctor :   you are right , it is one of the presentation of perimenopausal state
Doctor :   and it can last 7 to 10 days
User :   Will I then get a regular period?
Doctor :   it is due to hormonal imbalance
Doctor :   there are chances of you missing the next period too
User :   Is there anything I should do? Is there anything I can do to prevent it or get my periods back to normal that is natural so to speak. I mean with out going back on the pill.
Doctor :   no, HRT ( hormone replacement therapy ) is the only mode to reduce the symptoms in the perimenopausal period
User :   Will this continue from now on until I am in menapause or will it be interspursed with regular periods
Doctor :   yes, it can be interpursed with regular periods
Doctor :   such deviations can be expected at least 3 months or 5 months once
Doctor :   till menopause, but not always
User :   although it is daily and there is not alot of discharge, if I have intercourse will it be messy like a period. I would prefer not to be grossed out so to speak with alot of brown discharge.
Doctor :   no , there would be no problem , but i still advice to abstain till it ends
Doctor :   as the mucosa gets sensitive and may have rashes and risk you to Urinary tract infection or vaginitis
User :   sounds good to me. one last question. If it continues past ten days, should I see a doctor or wil it eventually XXXXXXXX out
