User :   Hi,I recently had a LFT and the gamma gt was 156. I understand this is high and have been told to reduce my alcohol intake. What I want to know is if this could be related to anything else? I am far from a chronic alcohol abuser, I only have a few drinks twice a week. I have a friend who drinks everyday and his results were 42.
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Dr XXXX here
Doctor :   Let me read your query
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   as far as the GGT levels are concerned
Doctor :   they are highly specific to alcohol liver ds
Doctor :   liver disease can be seen in pts who drink very less alcohol due to genetic predisposition
Doctor :   some pts who drink more, can be less affected, coz, the way the body reacts to it and how it metabolises alcohol is different in every person
User :   how bad is 156?
Doctor :   also a person who drinks daily, may drink less amounts per day, so that the body is adjusted on a daily basis
Doctor :   may i know, how are your ALP levels
Doctor :   are you there ?
User :   i don't have the results with me, they are at the doctors.
Doctor :   the normal level is 3 to 60 IU/L
Doctor :   It depends on whether the other enzyme levels are elevated along with GGT as well
User :   as far as i can remember everything was fine except for ggt
Doctor :   This elevation may be temporary, perhaps due to medications you are taking or alcohol ingested within 24 hours of the test.
Doctor :   If other liver enzymes are normal, you may just wait and then repeat the GGT test.
Doctor :   If the GGT is very high and/or your other liver enzymes are elevated, you may want to do more extensive testing like USG liver to know the cause
User :   yeah repeating in 6wks
User :   thank you
Doctor :   In your case, you can wait for few weeks and then repeat it again
Doctor :   you are welcome
Doctor :   thanks for consulting me
Doctor :   bye for now
