Doctor :   hi
User :   hey
User :   i have about hepatitis C
Doctor :   dr
Doctor :   ok,
Doctor :   what do u want to know ?
User :   my father had it for at least 10 years
Doctor :   ok
User :   and he's not doing good at all, and hospital that he's at are not doing good for him
Doctor :   may i know ur age ?
User :   i'm 27
Doctor :   and ur fathers age ?
User :   65
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   how did ur dad get infected ?
User :   his stomach start filling with fluid that needs to be drained, what's the cause of the fluid?
Doctor :   that is coz of cirrhosis , due to liver damage
User :   i think he got infected back home they didn't have vaccine.
Doctor :   reduced protein synthesis, causes protein to leak out into the stomach
User :   live damage, u mean he needs a liver transplant
Doctor :   no
Doctor :   has any biopsy been done ?
Doctor :   also has the liver content of hep C been determined
User :   yes he did it five months ago
User :   also he has type B
User :   why he does not need transplant?
User :   yea it's been determined.
Doctor :   transplant can be done, if the hep c can be treated
User :   i don't understand?
Doctor :   but in case, the Hep c is progressive, transplant will not help as the Hep c will destroy the transplanted liver as well
User :   so u mean they can treat H C
Doctor :   IN YOUR FATHERS case, the Hep c appears to be progressive, and he may need some interferon like medications
Doctor :   these meds can be helpful to control the disease
User :   can u name any kind of med?
Doctor :   interferon , this is a prescription medcine
Doctor :   given by IV infusion at a hospital
User :   how could u tell if the virus is active or not?
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :   when a biopsy of the liver is done, it can detect the viral load by PCR
Doctor :   in addition a serology for hep c can also be done to detect Hep c
Doctor :   serology is blood tests to check for antibodies
User :   can he get better with the men?
Doctor :   you mean medicines
User :   sorry i mean can he get better with mediation?
Doctor :   since he has reached the stage of cirrhosis, it is difficult to interprete
Doctor :   but with interferon , the chances of imprvement are better
User :   so r u recommend?
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :   you can go with the medications (Interferon)
Doctor :   you might consult a hepatologist , who can determine the requirement for him
User :   u mean the fluids in his stomach will stop?
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :   once the cirrhosis is controlled it will
Doctor :   hi are you back ?
Doctor :   Dr
User :   hey
User :   ok he's so weak and refuses to eat in most parts he complains about his stomach?
Doctor :   i understand
Doctor :   collection of fluid in the abdomen is due to reduced synthesis of proteins by the affected liver
Doctor :   this also causes swelling of the legs too
Doctor :   albumin infusion and a good protien diet 1-2 gm per kg body weight will be helpful
Doctor :   the condition can worsen with the progression of Hep C
User :   the hospital send him home like a week ago and he's weak and they did not drain the fluid because they are afraid of blood infection
Doctor :   OK
Doctor :   since your father is 65 yrs, any infection can cause more problems
Doctor :   and hence the hospital may not like to take any chances
User :   so is that fluid will be gone as urine/
Doctor :   but it should not be a problem to remove the fluid in the belly
Doctor :   once the liver function improves, the fluid can be reabsorped into the circulation
User :   what he had a stork like a month ago, is that because of the liver proplems?
User :   also he had a depression.
Doctor :   chronic conditions requiring treatment will be associated with depression in such patients
Doctor :   treatment of associated condition will be helpful too
User :   how long does it usually take for patients to recover?
Doctor :   4-6 months
User :   4-6 months since he got worse, right?
Doctor :   no, i mean, 4-6 months of therapy, will help him recover his liver function
User :   ok
Doctor :   is there anything else i can help u with
Doctor :   I hope i have cleared any doubts that u might be having
Doctor :   thank you for consulting me here , please leave your feedback
