User :   Hi..
I just got discharged on December 10th 2009. I was admitted for Acute vestibular neuronopathy. I was treated with vertin after all investigations including MRI, lumbar tap etc showed normal results.
I had my follow up check up today. I have had constant headaches since I got discharged..almost everyday. The doctor prescribed "tryptomer" 10 mg for a week and then 25 mg for 3 weeks. I have heard tryptomer can have side effects including giddiness, weight query=Hi..

Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :
let me read it
User :   Thanks
Doctor :
Ok done
Doctor :
Now proceed with your specific questions
User :   Ok..I have a history of migraines for which I normally take either a nimulid if very severe or mobizox...since my discharge..I have had headaches everyday..right from the time i wake up..tho intensity is not that high..for this i was prescribed tryptomer
Doctor :
Ok
User :   My question is...I have heard tryptomer has a number of side effects...and pregabalin is also prescribed at times instead..which has fewer side effects..should I go for tryptomer? or should I take pregabalin
User :   or instead should I go to another neurologist? or is this medication apt for my condition? the problem is I am not too sure of my condition itself..so am not too confident of the medication as well
Doctor :
Either of them do not produce side effects as they will be prescribed for short duration
Doctor :
and corrected later
Doctor :
Your problme of headache should be controlled first
Doctor :
so the Doctor is aware of the same and prescribes you
User :   so the weight gain, constipation etc is not permanent? as soon as i stop tryptomer, the weight gain, constipation will subside?
Doctor :
Exactly
User :   ok...the tryptomer is a pain killer? does it also have a sedative effect?
Doctor :
yes
User :   also...would you be able to explain what vestibular neuronopathy is please?
Doctor :
yes
User :   thanks
Doctor :
Vestibule is part of the inner ear
Doctor :
and some times degenerative changes start
Doctor :
in it causing the symptoms you had
Doctor :
the cause of the changes is said to be age related
User :   but I am just 27
Doctor :
Yeah
Doctor :   It does not mean to occur after 50
Doctor :
It can happen from 20 itself
User :   ok...and part of the symtoms are acute tremors, teeth chattering, vomiting, giddiness as well?
Doctor :
Were some tests done?
User :   Yes..an MRI was done which was normal. Post that a lumbar tap was done ..that was also normal
Doctor :   That is fine
User :   apart from that a CBC and thyroid test was done. Thyroid tests were normal. CBC showed elevated WBC
Doctor :
Ok
Doctor :
The disorder eventually goes away without treatment.
User :   the other question I had was....post discharge...i have had terrible mood swings...and i am usually not a very hyper sensitive person except when I have PMS
Doctor :   Since it was a viral attack
Doctor :
and the swings happen and take lot of time to reduce
User :   but lately i have been flying off the handle completely for no reason at all...or feeling like i am behaving like a mad person...is it possible that it has anything to do with the condition i was admitted for?
Doctor :
they eventually come down
Doctor :
after few days of symptoms
User :   ok..so it is not something abnormal
Doctor :
Vestibular neuronitis is triggered by viral attack
User :   will tryptomer cause my mood swings to get worse?
Doctor :
so the person feels very uncomfortable for few weeks
User :   oh ok...so i had a viral infection that triggered the neuronitis...how many weeks does it take normally for recovery? and can i take any precautions to ensure it doesn't happen again?
Doctor :   Since viruses cannot be prevented
Doctor :
You can just follow the personal hygienic measures
Doctor :
like washing hands properly
User :   I have a relatively healthy diet...however i get very little sleep...3-5 hours a night...and I smoke upto 3 cigarettes a day and consume alcohol occassionally. Apart from that, my lifestyle is pretty stress free. I am trying to get more sleep..and cut down on smoking. anything else i can do?
User :   Should I avoid alcohol while on tryptomer?
Doctor :   Yes

Doctor :
I hoep your doctor should have told about it
User :   uh..no my doctor didn't tell me that..i guess she didn't ask me if i consumed alcohol at all
User :   ok..so no alcohol until i finish the course of tryptomer correct?
Doctor :   Cigarette smoking ppts the attacks of vestibular neuronitis
User :   i take oral contraceptives as well.. AAAAAAA ..that will not affect me while taking tryptomer as well?
User :   ok...
User :   and about the oral contraceptives?
Doctor :
It delays the metabolism of trytomer
Doctor :
Did you say about the same to the Doctor
User :   no :(
User :   right now doctor asked me to take it 2 hours before bedtime
User :   should itake it earlier?
Doctor :
No need continue the same
User :   did u say cigarette smoking perpetuates the attacks of vestibular neuronitis? as in it makes it worse?
Doctor :
Very much
User :   ok
User :   thank you
Doctor :   Anythign else?
Doctor :
