Doctor:How can I help you?
User:wanted to chat regarding my mother
User:She is 62...and from past few days.... i notice that she is coughing continuously
User:though there is no cough in the body
User:but at night if she starts coughing dosent stop
User:she visited the doctor last week...and he gave her cough syrup... but its not showing results
Doctor:Since when are these symptoms present?
Doctor:could you specify the days please?
User:She got viral fever last month and was in bed for 7-8 days for that
User:since then it is noticeable
Doctor:Is she on any regular medications?
User:she had viral fever since aug 17-18th i think
User:and then after that she recovered from fever ib 8 -10 days
Doctor:Does she have history of diabetes/hypertension?
Doctor:Any asthma problems?
User:but she has had this problem before also... when this happens it remains for long
User:no diabetes or hypertension
User:no asthama as well
Doctor:Currently does she experience any breathing issues or chest pain?
User:because of the continuous coughing she complained of back pain few days back
Doctor:Let me brief you.
Doctor:Persistent cough is associated with bronchitis or a variant of asthma.
Doctor:Considering that she has no past history of asthma and now is not breathless, asthma is less likely.
Doctor:But I still cannot rule out bronchitis.
Doctor:Bronchitis is of 2 types acute and chronic.
Doctor:As you say, she has had similar symptoms in the past, it is likely that she has chronic bronchitis.
Doctor:In such cases symptoms can flare up due to infection or allergies.
Doctor:Now what can be done:
User:I see
Doctor:1. The symptoms usually gradually improves with time.
Doctor:We do commonly see symptoms lasting for few weeks to a month or two.
Doctor:2. As her symptoms are distressing, deep steam inhalation can be helpful.
Doctor:Encourage her to take steam inhalation twice or thrice a day.
Doctor:3. If symptoms do not improve, we do suggest the use of bronchodilator inhalers.
Doctor:A physician nearby can prescribe her inhalers like asthalin. This can be used during the paroxysms of cough.
Doctor:4. Most cough syrups are expectorants which have not much effect on such dry cough.
Doctor:Instead of the expectorants, we can use cough suppressants (antitussives)
Doctor:These syrups are prescription only drugs and can be obtained only with a prescription from a doctor.
Doctor:Report back to her physician and he/she can give a prescription for antitussives and inhalers.
Doctor:5. Encourage her to drink plenty of fluids and fruits and vegetables.
User:shall i take her to any ENT specialist?
Doctor:These measures should help her feel better.
Doctor:Either an ENT specialist or chest physician can deal with this problem.
Doctor:You can contact one of them.
Doctor:Have you followed?
Doctor:Do you have any other query?
User:yes... noted what you said
User:well no....
Doctor:Thanks for consulting me.
User:thanks :)
Doctor:I wish a speedy recovery of your mother.
Doctor:Bye for now.
