User:I am having constipation problem

User:More than a decade
Doctor:How old are you?
User:Unable to have free motions
User:I am 40 now
Doctor:How many servings of fruits and vegetables do you have in a day?
User:I have around 3-4 slices of orange and one whole pomegranate

Doctor:How much water/ other fluids are you consuming in a day?
User:I have at least 3 litres of water
User:I consume tea thrice a day
Doctor:Are you receiving any medication?
User:I take an ayurvedic tonic which is for purification of body
User:otherwise, nothing at all

Doctor:How much do you exercise?
User:Frankly speaking, I dont
User:I only walk on Saturdays & Sundays
User:I have a backache and do some pysiotheraphy exercises once in two days
Doctor:First of all, you need to take a high fibre diet
Doctor:You would need to eat atleast 5-6 servings of fruits and vegetables
Doctor:Also include plenty of fluids, like you are doing

User:I personally fill up two ltrs of bottle in the office and consume it
User:I understand exercise is a must for any human being, but it really becomes very difficult on weekdays since I travel for 6 hours a day (to and fro) to work

User:No, I live in Mumbai and the cost of living would be very high if I plan to live close to my office (rentals would eat away a huge chunk of my salary)
Doctor:Then why dont you buy a bike or a treadmill for your house?
Doctor:Or start walking in your locality for just 30 minutes?
User:I can do that
User:yes, I can certainly do that

User:Regarding fluids, should I consume anything else, apart from tea

Doctor:Actually tea and coffee cause constipation
User:No, not really.

User:If I dont consume tea, I start getting a headache. May be that is a phobia too

User:Yes, I too heard that tea & coffee adds to constipation

User:I have been habituated to drinking tea for the last 30 years (first thing in the morning, after brushing my teeth)

User:planning to go a check up for diabetes
Doctor:If the constipation does not get better after taking a high fibre diet, exercise etc

Doctor:Hypothyroidism is a condition in which there is decreased function of the thyroid gland
Doctor:It can lead to constipation, sluggishness, fatigue, weight gain, decreased appetite, excessive sleepiness
Doctor:To get screened, you would need to get a serum TSH level done

User:Can I get some specific advice for some immediate relief

Doctor:You can also Isabgol, 1 tsp in the morning with milk at night
User:I also feel slight pain in the chest. Is it becos of acidity
Doctor:Does it come on when you exercise ?
User:yes, I have tried it earlier with water
Doctor:I would not recommend Isabgol on a long term basis
User:Should I take it only at night
Doctor:The pain can then be related to acidity
Doctor:Only at night
User:Is it with one glass of milk
Doctor:Try and avoid spicy or oily food
Doctor:However you like it
User:I dont eat spicy / oily food
Doctor:For the heart burn, avoid alcohol, smoking, spicy food
User:I dont smoke and also dont drink
Doctor:You can tablet zantac 300 mg when you feel the pain
Doctor:Thats great
Doctor:Also, eat at regular intervals
User:Actually, I have trouble during motions. It takes almost half-an-hour.
Doctor:Yeah, we discussed that
Doctor:Increasing your fibre will help substantially
User:I also have a yawning problem. When I yawn, water comes out of my eyes. Do you know the reason for it?
Doctor:It happens with everyone
User:I shall follow your advice doctor and I will be thankful to you if I am relieved of my constipation problem
Doctor:The reason is that when you contract your facial muscles, it presses on your lacrimal gland
Doctor:This causes the fluid to come out
Doctor:The other reason is slightly more complicated
