User :   I have GERD . What are the precautions that I need to take?
Doctor :   May I know your age and gender?
User :   I am M 33
Doctor :   Since when are you having the symptoms?
User :   About two years. I had my endoscopy done & the doctor informed me that I have GERD
Doctor :   Have you seen a doctor or taking any medications for your current symptoms?
Doctor :   Are you on any treatment for your symptoms?
User :   I used to take Rantac /Omeprazole earlier. Now i have discontinued
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Let me brief you.
Doctor :   GERD is managed by conservative and surgical means.
Doctor :   Conservative treatment is by medications and lifestyle modifications.
User :   ok
Doctor :   Ranitidine, proton pump inhibitors are given in ones having severe symptoms.
Doctor :   Hence if your symptoms are frequent and severe, you may have to continue these medications for few more weeks.
Doctor :   Other measures include
Doctor :   1. Antacid syrups such as gelusil 1 tsp thrice a day before meal for a week or two
Doctor :   (avoid this syrup if you are taking rantac along)
Doctor :   2. Don't hit the bed immediately after a meal
Doctor :   You need to get to the bed only after 2 hours following your dinner or any other meal
User :   Thats right doctor. Even during sleep I try to keep my body elevated. If I sleep flat I am sure to have gastritis the very next day
Doctor :   3. While sleeping, elevate the head end by using 2 pillows
Doctor :   You need to make use of the gravity and make sure digestion is atleast partially completed before you sleep

Doctor :   4. Avoid having a stomach full meal (just stop when you feel enough)
Doctor :   5. Avoid spicy food in your meal

Doctor :   6. Restrict consumption of caffeine (coffee) and other beverages.
Doctor :   7. Restrict consumption of chocolate(cocoa containing products), sauce and other junk food.

Doctor :   6. Yoga and meditation are known to have beneficial role in the treatment of GERD,

Doctor :   Occasionally, conservative treatment fails

Doctor :   If there is no effects on your symptoms with this treatment
Doctor :   then the next step will be surgical.
Doctor :   There are fundoplication surgerier which can be done to treat your symptoms.
User :   Doctor said I am responding well with medication & donot require surgery at this stage.
Doctor :   Discuss with your gastroenterologist, if the symptoms do not respond well to the conservative treatment.

User :   Doctors say the chances of reoccurence is less with operation but cannot be assured 100%.

Doctor :   surgical treatment are better effective than the conservative treatment, and
Doctor :   since they are invasive in nature are opted only if there is failure of conservative treatment.
