User :   My 3 year old son has a slight fever and a rash developing.
Doctor :   hi
Doctor :
ok
User :   He has also been waking up with his eyes crusted shut
User :   I am not sure if it is pink eye because he does not have any redness to his eyes
Doctor :
ok
Doctor :
did the rash started along with the fever?
User :   I think so. He just woke up from a short nap and I felt that he was a little hot and as I was taking the temperature I saw the bumps on his skin
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :
are the bumps itchy?
User :   yes
Doctor :
where did you notice the bumps first? which part of the body?
User :   He got them all at the same time and its on his back, chest, stomach, arms and legs
Doctor :
apart from his eye condition, does he have any other symptoms?
User :   his nose is plugged up
User :   I just thought he has had a cold for the last couple of days
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :
you should be taking him to ER ASAP, and get these bumps examined
Doctor :
these could be probably due to rubella or measles infection
User :   He has been given those vaccinations already though
Doctor :
since he has had previous cold and stuffy nose and then the fever with simultaneous eruption of rash, and with eye symptoms
Doctor :
the cause mostly points to measles infections
Doctor :
there are variants of the disease
Doctor :
so we have to check what exactly is going wrong
Doctor :
get his fever controlled by giving him Tylenol syrup and the rashes soothened by using Caladryl lotion
Doctor :
and take to his pediatrician or ER as soon as possible
Doctor :
such that early diagnosis can be made
Doctor :
have you followed what i have said?
User :   yes I just called his dr and she recommended tylenol and benadryl
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :
that is fine
Doctor :
you can start with that
Doctor :
but since the rashes are itchy
Doctor :
you can use the Caladryl lotion to soothen them
Doctor :
such that the child is comfortable
User :   ok how do I notice the difference between hives and something else?
Doctor :   hives will come down if Cetrizine syrup is given, even with benadryl these will be a bit fine
Doctor :
if not then they are not hives
Doctor :
but rash related to infection
User :   Are you saying that hives will go down with the benadryl?
Doctor :
if it is allergic, it will come down a bit, but not if it is due to the infective cause
User :   How long should it take to go down after I gave him the benadryl?
Doctor :
as it most likely is as evidenced by the fever
Doctor :   it should be down within 1/2 hour if it is allergic
Doctor :
but if not, then
Doctor :
it will progress as the fever gets more, involving entire body
Doctor :
and being itchy and with little pain
Doctor :
and if it is infective cause due to rubella, then the rashes wil start disappearing on the third day
User :   Ok I checked his temperature again and it has gone down 1 point since I gave him the tylenol about 20 minutes ago. I just gave him the benadryl. At what point should I be looking at taking him in? He just fell asleep so do I wait till the morning if the rash and fever are still there?
Doctor :   if the fever is getting controlled, then fine

Doctor :
look if rashes are going down in another 20 minutes
Doctor :
else you should be taking him and getting examined and evaluated
Doctor :

Is there any thing else I can help you with?
User :   Ok his rash is still really visible no change but its only been about 5 minutes since the benadryl. If it does not go down is it safe to wait until tomorrow to take him in or something I should do tonight?
Doctor :
it is better to take immediately
Doctor :
but if he is fine
Doctor :
with no respiratory symptoms and he is ok
Doctor :
then wait and see if rashes are down
Doctor :
take him in the morning if the condition is not getting worse.
User :   ok I will watch him closely. Thanks.
Doctor :   Is there any thing else I can help you with?
