User :   my 16 yr old son was diagnosed with whooping couph in August (actually he had in early Aug but didn't get diagnosed until a couple weeks later). his symptons have diminished but completely - my question is does participation in sports (basketball) have a negative effect on him in terms of prolonging recovery, etc. (I have been told there is no cure it has to run course) thanks you
Doctor :   Hi
User :   hello
Doctor :   Does he have any other medical conditions such as bronchial asthma?
User :   no
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Let me brief you.
Doctor :   Sport activities may not cause any further complications, however,
Doctor :   there are chances that, your son may spread the infection while coughing.
User :   he was on anti biotics and is no longer contagious - he has been back to school for about 4 weeks
Doctor :   If he is free from the symptoms, he can participate in the sports activities, provided he doesn't have other medical condition, especially bronchial asthma.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   he is not free from the symptons but significantly improved and back to school. but will participating in sports delay his full recovery?
Doctor :   It would depend on his present general condition.
Doctor :   If his present general condition is normal, he can participate in the event.
Doctor :   But my suggestion would be
Doctor :   to avoid the participation, if possible till complete recovery.
Doctor :   as inadequate rest has a role in delaying the recovery of illness.
