User :   I am going to xxxx on sunday and have started my period. I started taking norethisterone on the same day to stop it but so far it hasnt worked! What can i do? i really dont want to be on my period whilst on my honeymoon. I have polycystic ovaries and suffer with irregular periods that usually last 6 weeks.
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   iam.dr.xxxxx
Doctor :   May i read your post
User :   of course
Doctor :   did you take atleast before three days
Doctor :   of your expected periods
User :   No because my periods are irregular i dont know when they are going to start. I started my period on monday and started taking noirethisterone the same day. I have heard from a friend that if i take one every 2 hours it will stop
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   the usual method is to take it alt least 3 days before the expected periods
Doctor :   to get the benefit
Doctor :   since you started with the period you cannot get the result
User :   but the doctor prescribed them to me knowing i was on my period
Doctor :   you need to take it anyway till the desired date
Doctor :   ok
User :   i have a months worth
Doctor :   but what the hormone does is usually
Doctor :   prevents ovulation a nd some hormone change to prevent the menses
Doctor :   once it has happened then the chances are not there
Doctor :   you may anyway continue that
Doctor :   as for some the benefit will come
User :   it has made my period extremely heavy and painful. Do you think it will last just a week like a normal period or do u think i will suffer with my usual 6 week one
Doctor :   as some hormonal change has taken place now
Doctor :   it might have some change
Doctor :   ]from your
Doctor :   usual one
User :   is there anything i can do to stop my period? I have heard tht drinking lime juice does it
Doctor :   not medically supported
Doctor :   but for some dr advise to Take a single dose of Norethisterone on the first day of your period, then continue to take one pill each day at the exact same time as the first dose.
User :   but i cant do that because my period has already started
Doctor :   ok
User :   is it safe to take 1 tablet every 2 hours to see if that stops it
Doctor :   Norethisterone is a man-made form of progesterone, a naturally occurring female sex hormone in the body. At low doses, it prevents release of an egg from the ovaries and increases the thickness of natural mucus in the womb
Doctor :   no i dont think that is the dose
Doctor :   as it is sudden hormonal change that will happen then
User :   my doctor recommended 1 5mg tablet 3x a day but i have read that if i take 1 every 2 hours it will stop
Doctor :   dont do that with out advise
Doctor :   can you contact your dr anyway
User :   he cant see me till next week which is too late as i go away this weekend
Doctor :   The administration of 1 tablet norethisterone 3 times daily over 10 days leads to the arrest of uterine bleeding not associated with organic lesions within 1 to 3 days.
User :   what does that mean
Doctor :   in the bleeding due to any other cause than menses
Doctor :   it will not stop
Doctor :   In individual cases, bleeding usually diminishes during the first few days after the commencement of tablet-taking and does not stop until about five days later for some..
User :   so shall i continue taking them them and it should stop
Doctor :   yes you may
Doctor :   but if you have severe bleeding
Doctor :   you may need emergency care
Doctor :   1 tablet PRIMOLUT N(norethisterone) 2 to 3 times daily for not longer than 10 to 14 days, beginning about 3 days before expected menstruation. A normal period should occur 2 to 3 days after medication has stopped.
Doctor :   There have been no reports of serious harmful effects from taking too many PRIMOLUT N tablets at one time.
Doctor :   If you have taken several tablets at a time, you may have nausea, vomiting or vaginal bleeding.
