User :   I had endoscopic sinus surgery two weeks ago (second one) that addressed all sinus areas. Since then, I experience unpredictable, short-lived motion sickness. My left ear is plugged (which is not unsual) and today a feel a throbbing in it. My whole left side of my neck is very sore including my sternocleodmastis, traps, scalenes, etc. My mastoid process is significantly more swollen on my left side and is red. I explained above to my ENT during my two post op appointments about the motion sickness and I fell he just ignores it. The latter part of my symptoms have occurred today. I was on Augmentin for 10 days prior and after surgery (originally due to left ear infection). What would you do if you were me?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Let me read the query.
Doctor :   May I know your age?
User :   35
Doctor :   Do you have symptoms of ear ache, ear discharge, hearing disturbances?
User :   currently hearing disturbance. but the point behind my ear is a burning pain
User :   I feel fluid in my ear
User :   ENT confirmed it is still plugged on Tues
User :   was I mean
Doctor :   Do you mean blocking sensation in the ear?
User :   I feel fluid in my ear/blocking and it was confirmed on Tues that it is still plugged
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Do you have tenderness on the mastoid region too?
User :   yes
Doctor :   Are you running fever?
User :   no
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   May I know what was the treatment suggested by ENT specialist?
User :   Are you talking about the motion sickness or the ear being plugged
Doctor :   The ear being plugged?
User :   Motion sickness not addressed. If ear is still an issue at my six week post appt then he will put a tube in it.
User :   mastoid was not swollen on Tues. I woke up with a sever stiff neck on Wed
User :   That is unusual for me
Doctor :   Let me explain to you.
Doctor :   Sitting from this far without physical examination, it is hard to predict what the problem might be.
Doctor :   However,
Doctor :   In view of mastoid tenderness, pain, blocking sensation of the ear, middle ear pathologies / mastoiditis needs to be ruled out.
Doctor :   They can only be ruled out by an ENT examination, xray/scans and other tests.
Doctor :   If diagnosed you will need antibiotics as well as surgical treatment.
Doctor :   Hence if I were to be your doctor, i would like to evaluate you further.
Doctor :   Get blood tests, Xray of the mastoid, refer you to ENT specialist for physical examination.
User :   OK
User :   At this very moment I have another rx available for Augmentin and I also have cipro drops available in the meantime?
Doctor :   It is necessary that you continue the antibiotics.
Doctor :   Augmentin is a good choice in the present condition.
User :   Cipro drops too?
Doctor :   If your symptoms are persisting, report back to your doctor for the evaluation.
User :   OK I would assume that I should be concerned if more swelling occurs or fever in the meantime?
Doctor :   Yes, fever, increase in the swelling, ear discharge which is pus stained,
Doctor :   difficulty in hearing associated with or without ringing sensation of the ear
Doctor :   are few symptoms that you need to watch out.
Doctor :   All these symptoms of few of the symptoms if found indicate that you need to get back to your doctor.
User :   Thank you very much for your time.
Doctor :   Do you have any other query?
User :   Is it normal to have motion sickness after sinus surgery?
Doctor :   Motion sickness is more associated with the ear problem that you are currently suffering
Doctor :   and not with the FESS surgery.
User :   OK thanks I do not have any more questions.
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me.
Doctor :   Bye for now.
