User :   Hi,my mom was 88 yrs old when she had a stroke almost 4 years ago.Her only side effect that remains is that she is constantly dizzy and lightheaded.She has used a walker since this happened.This dizziness is so frustrating for her is there anything that can help?Thanks.

Doctor :   May I know if there was left/rt. sided palcy/hemi-palcy / any bell's palcy when she had a stroke ?
Doctor :   When did the stroke occur?
Doctor :   How has she been recovering with Physio-help ?
User :   she hasnt done any physio
User :   stroke was almost 4 yrs ago

Doctor :   Usually we see unexplained dizziness , but the major reason for this symptom can be the causing factor/precipitating factors like : High BP .
Doctor :   How is her Blood Pressure now ?
User :   she is on blood pressure meds,high blood pressure
Doctor :   Ok. That is very good.
Doctor :   he blood supply should be brought to normal and the blood should reach all parts of the brain including the part where the damaged cells are present. If the stroke is very severe and has gone ahead, then care can be the only treatment. In some cases, the patients can recover but, some parts of his/her body can be impaired to some extent. In such cases, physical therapy is a must.

Doctor :   Especially for dizziness I would advise if it is accompanied by loss of balance, slow exercise therapy, physio help .

Doctor :   There are a few exercises that I shall advise you, but has to be done under an experienced trainer or a proper help.

Doctor :   1.Eye ball movements by just sitting at a place - Up-Down 5 times; Left- Right 5 times ;
Doctor :   2. Lt.lateral top to rt. lateral bottom and vice versa 5 times

Doctor :   3. Rotation very slowly from lt to rt and vice versa 5 times each.
Doctor :   These will co-ordinate the eye movemnets
Doctor :   The dizziness is mailny die to some speccific nerve tracts connecting eye-ear-vestibular-coclear - Proprioception in the muscles and body.
Doctor :   So Specific training for ear balancing : Doctor :   4. Bending side ways by just sitting at lifting rt. arm and bending toward left.
Doctor :   5.And lifting lt. arm and bending towards right.
Doctor :   These have to be done very slowly.
Doctor :   6. There are some exrecises where you need to train your head movemnts - bend forward, back ward, side ways and then rotate from left to rt. and rt. to left.
Doctor :   These are to be done under a physio's help initially.
Doctor :   7. Please do also see she practises breathing exercises and gets proper sleep.
User :   ok how long before we can expect some improvement?
Doctor :   Usually it takes 3 months to 6 months.
