User :   Hi, I am a 40yo female, have a firm painless lump or enlarged area about 1 1/2 inches x 3/4 inch on my right outside calf, just below the knee. The area is under a muscle, I can feel the muscle moving over it. I think it has been there for at least 6 months, when I first noticed it however it was smaller and I thought it was a muscle. What do you think it might be?
Doctor :   Hi,
Doctor :   DR xxx here
User :   Hi,
User :   Please read my question
Doctor :   yes, i read your post, can i ask you few details ?
User :   Sure
Doctor :   Can you stretch your muscle and see what happens to the swelling ?
Doctor :   whether it becomes prominent or disappears ?
User :   It becomes slightly more prominent as the muscle is flexed when my toes are pointed
User :   never disappears
Doctor :   then it is not under the muscle
Doctor :   if its under the muscle it disappears on stretching the muscle, is the swelling painful ?
User :   it fels like muscle on top
User :   not at all painful
Doctor :   no it cant be a muscle swelling, if it had arised form muscle you would have severe pain on stretching the muscle and it will disappear
Doctor :   i consider it be a swelling in the subcutaneous tissue
User :   it is about one quarter of an inch to one third of an inch higher than the other leg in that area
Doctor :   and the most common one in a female aged around yours it could be a lipoma or a neurofibroma
User :   what is the usual treatment for those things ?
Doctor :   yes , the site of such swellings could be anywhere except on bony parts
Doctor :   needs no treatment until any pain is noticed or sudden increase in size is also a consideration
Doctor :   i suggest you to get a biopsy of the swelling, which will help to arrive at the diagnosis
Doctor :   and whether or not it is complicated
Doctor :   FNAC wou; do
Doctor :   would*
Doctor :   Fine needle aspiration cytology
User :   I will see local doctoria about 5 days he is here again
User :   in about
Doctor :   not a problem, you have time
User :   the skin is not discoloured in any way
Doctor :   both the possibilities i mentioned are not serious
Doctor :   thts rite these swellings do not invade the epidermis, are limited to subcutaneous tissue only
Doctor :   hence no skin effects are seen
User :   very good, thankyou, i will try to relax until i see the local doctor, thankyou very much, have a nice weekend
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me, kindly provide your feedback
