Doctor my dad met with accident recently and he got operated in spine for D12 fracture. The doctor who operated him said he can never walk . But some other doctors in same hospital are sating that he can start walking through physiotherapy.
Can you please tell me will he be able to walk with physiotherapy
Doctor :   Hi
User :   hi doctor
Doctor :   D12?
User :   i hope my question was clear
Doctor :   Is it lumbar, thoracic?
User :   ya d12 spine fracture
User :   i dont know the rite term doctor .. the doctor who's traetin him said that his lower limb will not be active
Doctor :   There are Cervical C 1-12, Thoracis and lumbar spines
Doctor :   Can you check the reports
User :   sorry doctor the reports are in hospital . i just came home with lot of confusion in my mind
User :   when the doctor explained me he told me its just one spine bone called "d12" is fractured
Doctor :   Ok
User :   they had kept a rod and have screwed it
Doctor :   I got it it is Thoracic spine
User :   after operation the doctor told after 2 days we can expect movement in legs
User :   but he's telling he will never be able to walk
Doctor :   Did the doctors say any spinal cord damage?
Doctor :   The MRI of the spine will show any compression of the nerves
User :   there is crack in spine inwards
User :   was nerve compression was also there
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   Was he moving extremities? legs?
Doctor :   After the fracture.
User :   on the day of accident his legs has no feel
Doctor :   oh!
User :   but 2 days later he said he could feel something in legs
Doctor :   no sensations and no movements
User :   when i touched his legs ( till knees) he was able to feel my touch
Doctor :   That is drastic improvement in 2 days
User :   he had sensation after 2 days of accident
User :   but no movement in legs
Doctor :   OK
User :   today doctor told us that we can expect leg movement in 2 days
Doctor :   There are kinds of nerves
Doctor :   1 sensory nerves
User :   dad's age is 51
Doctor :   2 motor nerves
User :   ok doctor
Doctor :   There was a contussion of the spinal cord
User :   ok
Doctor :   The compression caused the contusion o cord
User :   ok doctor
Doctor :   The damage to nerves may be reversible or not
User :   oh
Doctor :   it depends on the intensity of the injury
User :   what can be cone doctor
Doctor :   If the damage is less , if there is no permanant damage to cord some recovery is expected
Doctor :   Right now the compression is relieved
Doctor :   Next step is physical theraphy
User :   ya doctor said the surgey went well
Doctor :   Contission will resolve in some weeks
User :   and we can expect movent in legs in 2 days .. but he's just saying he wont walk
Doctor :   Getting movements in legs tough to answer for me because I don't know how much trauma was there to cord
User :   thats what confusing doctor.. why is he saying he cant walk when there's movement in legs
User :   oh ok
Doctor :   if there is movement of legs, that is really good sign
Doctor :   He is right
User :   how doctor
Doctor :   When there is movements in legs in few days , it is a bad sign
User :   why is it doctor
Doctor :   If the injury is small on cord, recovery is possible and he cn move
Doctor :   but even after compression is relieved, if he is not getting movements means you suspect there severe damage to the cord which may not be reversible
User :   why early movement in legs is it a bad sign
Doctor :   Sorry
Doctor :   it is a good sign
Doctor :   If he is moving legs means, there is reversible damage and some movements can be expected in future
User :   doctor but from the day of accident he never lost his consious he remember everything well .
Doctor :   Because his brain not involved
Doctor :   The damage happened only at cord at D12 vertebra
User :   but really when doctor said he can never walk it was heart breaking . but his assitant told us he can never walk just because of surgery but which physiotherapy he can walk in few months
User :   ya doctor only at d12 cord
Doctor :   Here surgery is done to expect positive results (walking)
Doctor :   Surgeon who saw the cord while doing surgery know much better aboutthe cord
User :   s doctor
Doctor :   Because they can see how much damage happened to cord while surgery
Doctor :   Physical therapist answer by experience
User :   oh
Doctor :   I am sorry it is heart breaking, I will listen to doctor
Doctor :   But the management is the same : expect recovery
User :   we all are hoping for that recovery only doctor
Doctor :   Be positive. Physical therapy is vey imp component because without that muscles becomes weak
User :   ya doctor
User :   doctor but with good physical therapy will he be able to walk atleast 25%
Doctor :   Good nursing care very imp
Doctor :   it called paraplegia
Doctor :   if there is damage he can not move
User :   which one doctor
Doctor :   if there is reversible damage some movements are expected
Doctor :   Not moving the legs is called Paraplegia
User :   you mean that he cant even move his legs if there's serious damage rite ?
Doctor :   yes
User :   but doctor clearly said that we can expect leg movoents after 2 days
Doctor :   Did he tell there was any cut to cord
Doctor :   if there is no cut you can expect movemets
User :   not sure if its cut . he said he has operated by keeping a rod in spine
Doctor :   it depends on surgeon's diagnosis
Doctor :   Bones are fixed. Cord recovery depends on severity of damage
Doctor :   Leg movement depends on damage to cord
Doctor :   If the damage is less , no cut to cord some movements are expected
User :   but only if there's crack they operate by keeping rod rite ?
Doctor :   You need to ask the doctor how much was there to cord?
Doctor :   Without rod,all bones collapse
User :   oh
Doctor :   There will be more damage if the bones were not fixed
Doctor :   So that is first step
Doctor :   I wish a speedy recovery
Doctor :   Be courageous
Doctor :   Be positive
