User :   Good Morning, I'm concerned that I may be losing too much hair on a daily basis. Is it true that you can lose up to 100 hairs per day and it be normal? I don't notice any bald spots and my head still seems quite full of hair. How much is too much? Sometimes, I'll be sitting at my desk playing with my hair and 1 or 2 strands will come out. In the shower and when I comb, I tend to lose around 30-50. I don't keep count, but lately I have been a extra paranoid about hair loss. How do I know if I have a legitimate problem that requires a doctor's attention? I went for a complete physical in June - bloodwork all came back A-OK. Can I relax? -XXXXXXX
User :   I'm a 28 yr old female
Doctor :   Hi
User :   Good Morning
Doctor :   Let me read the query.
User :   ok
Doctor :   Yes, losing less than 100 hair per day is considered normal.
User :   how do you know when it's too much?
User :   are there other signs?
Doctor :   Anything less than this and if there is no recession of the hair line or no bald spots are normal.
User :   and, if i did have an "underlying illness"
User :   there should be other symptoms right?
User :   not just hair falling out?
Doctor :   If you find that your hair line is receding or if there are bald spots appearing then, you may be losing excessive hair.
User :   i got nervous
Doctor :   Hair loss can occur due to multiple reasons.
User :   ok
Doctor :   And most often there are related to anxiety, stress or other reasons like
User :   someone also mentioned that different seasons can cause more tjan usual to fall out
User :   than*
User :   if it's due to stress
User :   will it grow back?
User :   or is it gone for good?
Doctor :   excessive combing, certain hair products and so on.
Doctor :   Rarely they can occur due to infections or hormonal factors.
User :   i don't wash every day because it dries out
User :   so when i do wash.. there's quite a few
User :   i guess it's because its saved up from the days i dont wash
User :   ok
Doctor :   Hence if you do have symptoms of excessive hair loss, then consider these life style modifications.
User :   once i make those changes.. it should go back to normal right
User :   ?
User :   take vitamins?
Doctor :   1. Since dandruff is one of the major causes apart from stress and anxiety, antidandruff shampoos such as nizaral shampoo are recommended.
User :   no dandruff here
User :   I think I am fine.. I think I am focusing on it too much
User :   i found myself counting the hairs
User :   my hair is very long
User :   past my shoulder blades
User :   so when it comes out, it is noticeable
Doctor :   2. Apart from this good nutrition consisting of vitamin rich products such as green leafy vegetables, fruits are essential.
User :   ok
Doctor :   3. You can also use multivitamin supplements containing vitamin b complex and vitamin c along.
Doctor :   4. Most importantly, since stress and anxiety are the second most common factors for hair loss, you need to stop worrying,
Doctor :   Use meditation, exercises, good sleep as stress reducing medium/
User :   I'm trying. I guess I love my hair :( And, don't want to lose it
Doctor :   They will help in preventing hair loss.
User :   I suppose I just didn't know how much was too much
User :   I doubt I lose a 100 a day
Doctor :   The more you worry, the more you will lose hair.
User :   if i quit the worrying, will it usually go back to normal?
Doctor :   So do not panic or worry on this.
User :   ok :-)
Doctor :   Yes, it will normalise, once you stop worring and prevent the stress and anxiety.
User :   thank you
User :   diabetes and lupus.. diabetes would come up in bloodwork?
Doctor :   Apart from this, combing hairs when wet, using hair dryers when you hair is wet, or using a towel when your hair is wet
User :   and lupus has other symtpoms right?
Doctor :   all increases the hair loss.
User :   so don't comb when wet?
User :   wow.. i always do. didn't think it was a big deal
Doctor :   So avoid those.
User :   ok
Doctor :   Yes, diabetes and lupus can be diagnosed by blood tests.
User :   And my thyroid was OK too
Doctor :   Ok
User :   So... stop worrying about it
User :   lol i bet if you saw my hair, you'd laugh at me for worrying
User :   i do have a lot of it
User :   my husband teases me
Doctor :   Thyroid hormones, certain chronic infections and other condition such as high testosterone levels, use of oral contraceptive pills are other causes for hair loss.
Doctor :   They are to be considered, if your hair loss is persisting.
User :   ok
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   Yes Doctor
Doctor :   Do you have any other query?
User :   No I think I'm OK
