User :   I have had diverticulitis 2x since July and have had negative side effects from the standard Cipro Flagyl by mouth and IV in hospital for few days. I had the neuropathy from both drugs independently tested and tried and thus, Dr said not to use. Used Doxycycline, but had bleeding so Dr went to Clarithromycin. No fevers, but still have discomfort frequently. I am allergic to penicillin and sulfa based drugs as well. Is Clarithromycin effective for diverticulitis?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   let me read ur query
User :   hi
Doctor :   hello there
Doctor :   yes
User :   yes, it's effective?
Doctor :   clarithromycin is a good antibiotic and useful for diverticulitis as it kills anaeribic bacteria
Doctor :   these bacteria are more common in intestinal infections
Doctor :   so it is very much helpful
User :   Thanks...that makes me feel better...I've been on it for about a month...
Doctor :   any issues with it ?
User :   No, and I'm pleased about that. It is just that I still have discomfort in lower left quadrant and want to begin with a probiotic, but don't know if the probiotic will cause a flare up
Doctor :   no, probiotics are good
User :   My stools yesterday and today were not as formed and I don't want to get the C-Diff
Doctor :   they are the good bacteria, they will help in the gradual improvement of the bowel functions
User :   Is it normal to have discomfort from the diverticulitis area after the infection is cleared?
Doctor :   yes
User :   Wow...that also makes me feel good. I keep taking it b/c of the discomfort thinking the infection is still lingering.
Doctor :   since you still have the diverticuli (extentions of the intestines) there will be some discoimfort
User :   Any suggestions on how to calm the colon naturally?
Doctor :   infection or inflammation of the diverticuli is diverticulitis
Doctor :   fibre rich foods can help to form good stools
Doctor :   u need to prevent constipation
Doctor :   lost of oral fluids, fruits, dry fruits, cereals, fibre supplemts , flax seed (ground) are good for making formed stools
User :   I got this b/c of celiac...I don't digest food well and it was coming out whole. And, history of IBS w/constipation, regardless of what I would eat. So, I'm working on it slowly so as not kick off one thing or another...a tough balancing act.
Doctor :   i understand, ...
Doctor :   but you surely will get out of it
Doctor :   persistance and patience , is important
User :   I hope you are right as some days get me to wonder :) Have you had any success w/grain free diets?
Doctor :   what do u mean by grain free diet ?
User :   No grains at all, just fruit, veggies and fish/organic chicken/beef/lamb
Doctor :   grains basically cereals are rich in fibre
Doctor :   so its bettter you include it in your daily diet
User :   I eat a ton of brown rice daily...thanks, I have been afraid to give that up as it makes up most of my daily fiber.
Doctor :   Foods Rich in SOLUBLE Fiber: Oatmeal or oat bran; Brown rice; Orange, grapefruit, green plantain
User :   I eat 2 family bags of brown rice day...6 squash boiled...4-6 pears boiled
Doctor :Foods that can act as laxatives include -- Prunes, figs, Psyllium husk, shredded wheat, flaxseed (oil), Senna, Cascara sagrada, Aloe vera juice, Dandelion root, Molasses, Liquorice, etc.
Doctor :   these food contain enough fibre that will help you
User :   Thanks so much for you info. I feel better about the antibiotic and beginning the probiotic
Doctor :   you are welcome
Doctor :   Is there anything else i can help you with ?
User :   Do you know what Deglycherized licorice is? Someone told me DGL heals the intestines and I could take that w/the antibiotic
Doctor :   it is a processed licorice , which removes a particular component in licorice
User :   DGL supposedly has the negative properties of licorice that affect blood pressure, etc. removed so you can take w/out any side effects?
Doctor :   yes that is right
User :   Is it OK to take w/the antibiotic?
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :   it does not matter
Doctor :   you can take it
User :   Excellent...I sooooo appreciate your information. Have a blessed day
Doctor :   you too
User :   Thanks
Doctor :   thanks for consulting me
Doctor :   have a great day
