User :   Hi, girlfriend had an operation 1 month ago basically to check in her stomach and bowls. She suffers bad cramps and period pains. She was put on colofac tablets and some sort of drink to go with it. We are sexually active and are always very careful. However she is 4 days late for her period and am growing concerned. Could it be the possible change in medication delaying it?
Doctor :   Hi
User :   Hi
Doctor :   May I know her age?
User :   She is 22
Doctor :   Are her period regular in the past?
User :   She used to be on the pill. But is off it now due to her stomach.
Doctor :   Are her period regular in the past?
Doctor :   Are you there?
User :   Yes
User :   She always got it once a month
Doctor :   Let me explain to you.
Doctor :   Menstrual delay is one of the common complaints seen in young women.
Doctor :   They can occur due to various reasons.
Doctor :   Most often a single episode of delayed periods occur due to no reasons.
Doctor :   However occasionally certain factors such as stress, infections, sleep disorders, anaemia can be the cause for menstrual disturbances.
Doctor :   So from your description, it is likely that possible that stress, recent surgery - added stress or anemia due to blood loss during surgery can be the cause for this delay.
User :   Yeah I was thinking it had something to do with the surgery
Doctor :   The medications that she is on is not known to affect menstruation and definitely not delaying the periods.
Doctor :   It is probably due to the stress/surgery that has caused the delayed periods.
Doctor :   I would however also suggest you to get a pregnancy test to make sure she is not pregnant, if you have been involved in sexual intercourse.(though your report that sexual intercourse has always been protected)
Doctor :   If pregnancy test is negative, then you need not concern.
Doctor :   Her cycles are expected to normalize in the subsequent cycles provide she has good, regular sleep and adequate nutrition.
Doctor :   Hope this is clear to you.
Doctor :   Do you have any other query?
User :   Yeah it is thanks for the help. No that is all thanks again!
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me.
Doctor :   Bye for now.
User :   Bye bye
