User :   I think I might have broken a blood vessel under my tongue on the bottom of my mouth. The black/ purple color seems to be spreading is this bad?
Doctor :   hi
User :   Hi
Doctor :   may i know how large is this color chage in centimeters?
User :   I dont know maybe a couple. It is covering most of the bottom of my mouth from where my tongue connects to part of my gums in the front
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   this could be due to bleeding within the tissues called as contusion
Doctor :   usually if it stops and is small, it will heal by itself in 1-2 weeks
User :   ok
Doctor :   but if it still progresses , and there is a swelling beneath the tongue causing a large visible mass , difficulty eating or swallowing, etc, then it could indicate a hematoma , which might need a surgical intervention, to drain the fluid
User :   So if it keeps spreading I should probably see a doctor?
Doctor :   if you are able to speak and eat , and not have any pain, etc, then it is fine
Doctor :   and specifically, it should be stable in size and location
User :   I have slight pain. I cant taste anything but I dont know if its that or the cold I have
Doctor :   if it spreads and develops the symptoms i mentioned like difficulty swallowing, eating , breathing etc, then you need to go to the ER
Doctor :   but if the condition stabilizes, then you can wait and watch and then see your doctor
Doctor :   in the mean time use sip ice water , to reduce the spread
Doctor :   i meant to sip ice water
User :   ok... would it affect my tasting of food?
Doctor :   yes, for a while, but it will not affect too much as the taste buds are not that much on the underneath surface of tongue
Doctor :   theyare more on the upper surface of tongue
User :   ok thanks
Doctor :   you are most welcome
Doctor :   thanks for consulting me here
Doctor :   bye for now
