User :   I was dx with breast cancer in 1998 and had an lumpectomy. Approx 9 months ago in the same breast I developed another lump. That was told to me was supicious. No treatment. Since then that lump by touch seems to have enlarged, and I now have another lump aside from that one in the same breast. I lost my mother to breast cancer, my grandmother and an aunt to breast cancer.
I was scheduled to go for Cancer Treatment Monday. However we were informed they are not on our insurance network provider list so they are sending me to Houston,
Given my history and family history is it unreasonable for me to ask for a bilateral masectomy even if the lumps are benign?
I am also 41 years old.
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Let me read what you have typed
User :   It is a pleasure to meet you.
Doctor :   Do you have any pain, burning or discharge from it?
User :   At times I do have a bloody discharge from the nipple area.
User :   As far as pain my breast is tender but I wouldn't consider it pain.
Doctor :   Since when are you having this discharge?
User :   It started approx 3 weeks ago.
User :   It isn't consistent. At times there is discharge and as quick as it starts it stops.
Doctor :   Is the discharge continuous? is it foul smelling?
User :   They started me on Femura 2.5 mg and then discontinued it.
User :   No it does not have a foul odor that I have noticed.
User :   It is not an ongoing discharge no.
User :   z
Doctor :   You need to get yourself examined as the bloody discharge can be malignant and also you have a family h/o Breast Cancer.
User :   They were unable to do a contrast mri due to the fact that my veins are very poor and I no longer have the port in my chest.
User :   Yes they are making arrangements to get me into MD in Houston
User :   My main question given my history and family history
User :   is if it is not malignant
Doctor :   You should immediately get all the investigations done and examined
User :   Is it unreasonable for me to request a bilateral mascetomy?
User :   I have similar symptoms that my mother did and she was told it was not malignant and she passed away 9 months later.
User :   I am willing to have any test available done.
User :   And I am sure they will do all they feel need to be done. But do I have a right to request the bilateral masectomy?
Doctor :   Now coming to your question if the lumps are benign it can be left over bit if malignant then mastectomy is the only option
Doctor :   The bloody discharge has to be investigated properly. Ha s the FNAC been done?
User :   I understand that if they are malignan then the mastectomy isthe only option. If they are not malignant can a mastectomy be performed as a preventive measure.
User :   No they have done no test. Other then they tried to to a contrast vs noncontrast mri
User :   They could not do the contrast because they could not access a vein.
Doctor :   It can be performed depending on the reports and also if your treating doctor is willing to do so.
User :   Ok then that will be up to MD to do when they admit me there in two weeks.
Doctor :   Also you require a FNAC to study the nature of discharge
User :   Ok and I am writing this down.
User :   I am a nurse but oncology is not my area.
Doctor :   Ok, no need to worry just relax and get it done soon.
User :   I will and I am pushing my insurance company as fast as I can to get things flowing at MD in Houston
Doctor :   Ok
User :   Thank you for your time and reassurance.
User :   And for your advice and direction for me to pursue in test.
Doctor :   Is there anything else you would like to know?
User :   I can't think of anything at this time.
Doctor :   All the best and Wishing you good health
User :   May you have a blessed week and thank you again!
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me, bye for now
Doctor :   T ake care
