Doctor:Let me brief you.
User:after we consultated the nurologist, he did the spinal cord MRI scaning & result is : everything is normal
User:both the doctors not able to identify what is the problem ?
Doctor:Foot drop occurs due to a neurological problem which occurs due to peroneal nerve weakness.
User:yesterday we met physio therapist
Doctor:The cause is usually in the deep peroneal nerve - a nerve of leg and foot.
User:he only told this foot drop problme
User:he said he has to give nerves stimulation
Doctor:Sometimes because of pressure over the leg and foot during pregnancy a new born can develop this problem.
Doctor:We generally suggest for nerve conduction study to determine the exact site and severity of the problem.
Doctor:A neurologist will be able to do that.
Doctor:At Bangalore you can visit Hosmat hospital.
Doctor:Have you followed?
User:i dont know about the nerve conduction study...
Doctor:You can consult a neurologist or pediatric neurologist and he/she would be able to guide you through the procedure.
User:what is this problem ?
User:will it effect the baby's growth of walking.. ?
Doctor: XXXXXXX let me put across in simple terms.
Doctor:Foot drop happens due to a neurological deficit.
Doctor:The nerve involved is deep peroneal nerve.
Doctor:If this problem was present since birth the usual cause is
Doctor:1. Because of pressure in the leg or foot.
Doctor:This happens if the baby in the womb was in an abnormal posture
Doctor:2. Due to birth trauma.
Doctor:If the problem is purely foot drop, the cause is usually in the limb and not spine.
Doctor:The treatment and recovery in such case depend on the severity of neurological deficit and the duration of symptoms.
Doctor:What is done is a test called nerve conduction study.
Doctor:Here small voltage electric current is passed through the nerve and measured using an instrument.
Doctor:The recordings received will tell us about the site of deficit and the severity of deficit.
Doctor:Based on this, a treatment either medical, TENS, physiotherapy or surgery can be planned.
User:what is TENS ?
Doctor:If none of the measures corrects this problem, treatment would be use of foot splints or reconstructive surgery by a plastic surgeon can be done.
Doctor:TENS refers to transcutaneous elecrical nerve stimulation.
Doctor:It is a form of therapy which utilizes small voltage currents to try and stimulate the nerve.
User:who will do the nerve conduction study ?
Doctor:If the nerve deficit is not severe, repeated TENS can stimulate the nerve to bring about movements.
Doctor:Nerve conduction study is performed by a neurologist.
Doctor:Since the problem involved neurology, orthopedic and cosmetic surgery, I suggested HOSMAT hospital in Bangalore.
Doctor:Again the choice to perform radical surgeries will be determined by the age of the child.
Doctor:So, if all these test are not done, I would suggest you to try all.
Doctor:Since this involves a future of the child.
Doctor:Have you followed?
Doctor:Do you have any other query?
User:if all these test are not done, I would suggest you to try all
User:wha does that mean ?
User:i did not get this
Doctor:I mean, if all these treatments are not tried, then please get it done.
Doctor:The test will guide the doctors towards proper treatment.
Doctor:So do consult a neurologist / pediatric neurologist for treatment.
Doctor:Hope it is clear now.
Doctor:Do you have any other query?
User:yes doctor
User:for all these tests best place in bangalore is HOSMAT hospital ?
Doctor:You will be able to find a neurologist, orthopedician and plastic surgeon here in this hospital and hence my suggestion.
Doctor:You can visit any other hospital where there are neurologist, plastic surgeon as well as orthopedician.
Doctor:Physiotherapy unit if present will be an additional plus.
User:approximately how much it costs doctor ? i have to plan this, hence i am asking for reference ..
Doctor:The cost of treatment depend on the type of treatment planned.
Doctor:Nerve conduction study can cost about Rs 500 to 750 INR.
Doctor:TENS can cost Rs 200 to 500 per setting.
Doctor:similarly other cost varies.
Doctor:The first step is to identify the problem, the cause or site of the problem and then the severity of the problem.
Doctor:Best treatment can be planned once we have all these issues cleared.
User:okay doctor..
User:if you don't mind could u plz list me all the treatment costs...
Doctor:The cost of treatment depend on the institute.
Doctor:I have mentioned the average cost of conservative treatments.
Doctor:If your daughter needs surgery, the cost may vary from 0000 to 0000 INR.
Doctor:I would suggest you to first consult a neurologist and get the Nerve conduction study
Doctor:which shouldn't cost you more than 1000INR
Doctor:Based on the report, we can have a clear idea of the next treatment and cost of it.
Doctor:So consult a neurologist.
User:sure doctor.. i do..
Doctor:Do you have any other query?
User:thank u doctor..
User:as of now no.
Doctor:Thanks for consulting me.
Doctor:Bye for now.
User:i will get back to you doctor once test is done
Doctor:Bye for now.
User:bye doctor .. have a nice day.. :)
