User:Hello Doctor, My son 22 months old has fever with voice arrest for the past 2 days, fever is under control but voice is still not fine, doctor has prescribed Allegra & Montair LC Kid along with Corex DX on 25th on further follow up he also advised Augmentin DDS, there is marginal improvement in voice correction, kindly advice wheather to go ahead with Augmentin or not, his weight is 16 Kg.
Doctor:Is he not able to speak or does he have some pain/difficulty in speaking?
User:He is trying to speak in a very very low volume in a husky note
Doctor:Let me explain.
Doctor:Children under 5 years of age are commonly affected by respiratory infection. Common flu and other flu virus and some other bacteria easily cause infection due to their immature immune system.
Doctor:Such infections can affect any part of the respiratory system causing varied symptoms.
User:We have given a flu vax on 25th
Doctor:The low husky voice also is one such symptom.
Doctor:This invariably heals in a few days to a week once the infection gets cleared off.
Doctor:So do not worry.
Doctor:Flu vaccine doesn't cover all strain of viruses. It covers for most strains of influenza virus but not all.
Doctor:So infections can still happen with other virus and bacteria.
User:My query is to put him on Augmentin DDS or not
Doctor:Augmentin DDS has no role in treating viral infection, however it has significant role in preventing secondary infection.
Doctor:In this instant, your doctor has prescribed the medication probably to prevent secondary infection
Doctor:so you may continue it as suggested by your doctor.
User:ok thx
Doctor:It becomes vital treatment if fever continues to persist and temperature is above 103 deg F.
Doctor:Have you followed?
Doctor:Do you have any other query?
Doctor:Are you there?
User:He never had a very high fever
User:Problem is very low Voice & loss of appetite
User:Almost low to soundless
Doctor:I understand that. Let me put across to you in simple words.
Doctor:The symptoms he has is due to upper respiratory tract infection which is most commonly due to viral infection.
Doctor:Antibiotic such as Augmentin DDS is not needed in such cases.
Doctor:I do not prescribe them to my patients.
Doctor:However, your doctor has probably prescribed this drug to prevent secondary bacterial infections.
Doctor:As secondary bacterial infections are very common in such respiratory infection.
User:Thank a mile for your valued guidance & the time
Doctor:Hope you understood.
Doctor:Do you have any other query?
Doctor:Are you there?
Doctor:Thanks for consulting me.
Doctor:Bye for now.
