Child has swelling on his glands left side, cough, mild fever. What does it indicate? - Online Doctor Chats
How can I help?
my child has swelling on his glands left side
what does this indicate
he is not eating properly for 2 days except for soup
is this any bad symptom for anything ?
he is 6 years old
You mentioned, that your son/daughter is not eating properly except for soup, do you mean he complains of pain while swallowing?
no since he is child he doesnt complainof pain
but his apetite has gone
and he takes only soup
no vomitting motion is ok
his doctor told him not to eat grapes which he takes a lot
and avoid fruits
The symptoms that your child has is suggestive of upper respiratory infection, most probably a viral one.
but he likes only fruits
It is usually a self limiting condition which heals in 3-5 days duration.
The calpol syrup and priton syp suggested by your doctor are good,
You need to continue them as prescribed.
It is common to have reduced appetite with viral infection.
it is one week that this swelling has not subsided yet so i am worried
his exams are near so i cannot give him antibiotics
Again do not worry, this will also improve as the infection subsides.
do i need to provide antibiotics?
I believe you noticed some swelling in the neck.
swelling in left neck in 2 places
If this is in the neck, the most common swelling that is nodular and pea like in shape is a lymphnode.
yes it is so
It occurs secondary to infection that he has now.
It might disappear once the infection reduces
and sometimes it might persist for a long time too.
So do not worry.
so will it heal naturally ?
Yes, it will heal.
Even if the swelling doesn't go away, do not worry.
so there is no need to start antibiotics right ?
It will not cause any harm.
I do not see any immediate need to start antibiotics now,
if there is mild fever should i continue with calpol ?
continue with the 2 syrups given to your child.
The most important thing at this point of time
1. Check with your child if he is not able to eat because of any pain in the throat.
if there is pain in throat he will not even drink soup
If there is no pain, then it is good.
but he only likes soup and drinks pleanty of water
he is avoiding solid food that is the concern
saying it is causing stomach pain
2. As I mentioned, it is normal to have reduced appetite with fever, but it is important that you feed him well with what ever he likes.
i dont know why
If its soup give him that in plenty.
Viral infection presents with wide range of symptoms.
k what about fruits ?
Again all these disappear as the infection settles.
There are no restrictions in diet.
dont told not to provide grapes which is fine
but other fruits should i give or not ?
my child cannot live without fresh fruits
There are no specific diet restrictions. If he likes fresh fruits, that is very good.
Give him with as much fruits.
It helps in faster recovery.
i keep fruits outside not in fridge
no refrigereted fruit is provide to him
That is good, wash the fruits well before feeding him.
Lastly keep a watch on his fever.
If the temperature is very high
of if the fever persists for more than 5 days, then he might need antibiotics.
Have you followed what I have suggested?
Do you have any other query?
i beileve this is no indication for TB or momo right ?
The symptoms are too short to term it as tuberculosis
I mean to consider it as tuberculosis
So do not worry.
also are u a child speciality sir ?
i mean child specialist ?
I am a general physician. I have worked in association with pediatric department too.
thanks a lot sir for all your help and guidance no more queries
You are welcome.
