User :   my baby boy is 25 days old today. he is suffering from chest congestion and cold ( no fever). we did a blood exam and found raised tlc of 13,400 and lymphocytes 59%. Moreover the hb level is 10.5. Does it mean that my baby is anaemic? pls suggest remedies? also does it mean the raised tlc is infection? could chest congestion be a cause for it. Pls note that i ve been anaemic thruout my pregnanct at about 8.4 and i am beta thalesemia minor ( carrier), fathers is normal.
Doctor :   Hi
User :   hi
Doctor :   pLS. give me few secs. to go through your query.
User :   sure dr.
Doctor :   Please do not worry, I shall answer your query one after the other.
User :   allrite dr.
Doctor :   1. You being a thalesemia minor and your husband being a normal, would not cause any harm to your baby.
User :   ok
Doctor :   So just dont worry about that and please ease yourself and there is absolutely no need for anxiety on that.
User :   but how about the hb levels
Doctor :   2. About the TLC
Doctor :   The new born has very high levels as high as on day of birth it can be 9000 to 30,000 but will come down to normal adult level in 2-3 weeks
User :   he is already 3 weeks plus now
Doctor :   Yes sometimes there can be a delay, not to worry, but even after 4 weeks/1 month , if it does not decrease it needs an evaluation by a neonatologist.
Doctor :   3.Hemoglobin has to 14 to 24 , but as the baby is 10.2 the baby is anemic.
User :   ok....
User :   is it that i ve passed the trait on
Doctor :   The iron status in mothercan affect the baby , hemoglobin levels
User :   ok
Doctor :   Thaessemia minor is a genetic receessive trait
Doctor :   It doesnt show up if only you are TM.
User :   TM??
Doctor :   T.minor
But if you want to double confirm , you can get a Hb. Electrophoresis done .
User :   what can i do to improvise hb levels in my baby
User :   he is exclusive breastfed as of now
Doctor :   From 11th day on you have to start on iron and calcium tablets as the baby is breast fed.
