I had a tension free hernia repair today (right inguinal), 8am. It's 11:40pm, and when I changed clothes I noticed a splotch of blood above where the incision was made- I just want to know if some bleeding is to be expected after this (or any) operation. Since it's so late, I can't call the surgeon. I'm not concerned, but bleeding wasn't mentioned as a possible side effect. Any help with this one?
Doctor :   hi
User :   Hello!
Doctor :
please give me sometime to read what you have typed
User :   Sure.
Doctor :
sometimes the bleeding might happen if any strain is there on the incision site.
Doctor :
was it fresh bleeding or was it mixed with serous fluid?
User :   It's below the dressing and as far as I can tell is dry.
Doctor :
ok
User :   It's slightly pinkish if that helps.
Doctor :
is there any active bleed right now?
User :   Not as far as I can tell, no.
Doctor :
is the dressing getting wet still?
User :   The splotch is fairly good-sized.
Doctor :
ok
User :   It does seem a bit damp.
Doctor :
i suggest you to call up your doctor or the same hospital where the surgery was done and inform them about this
Doctor :
they will suggest what best can be done
User :   That's what I want to do, but it's too late for me to make any phone calls at this time.
User :   So, bleeding of that sort is abnormal?
Doctor :
you might need to viist the hospital again in case your doctor feels so, and let some other surgeon have a look at the incision site to make sure its intact
Doctor :
mild bleed is file but what you explained is feeling a bit more than usual
User :   Okay, so stress might cause it?
Doctor :
so it should not be ignored
User :   I had the usual constipation from the painkillers.
User :   I may've strained too hard when I tried to take a bowel.
Doctor :
it might cause it. any pressure on the abdomen that increases intraabdomenal pressure, might cause it
Doctor :
ok
User :   Hmmm.
Doctor :
so that explains the cause for your bleeding
User :   Would that rupture the stiching at all do you think?
Doctor :
if the pressure was too much, then it can cause them to open or gape out
Doctor :   so it wil require re-examination to see if that has happened and is causing the bleed
User :   So the wound opens up a bit I assume.
Doctor :
and if that is the case
User :   Gotcha.
Doctor :
then it will need to be re-stitched
User :   Hmmm that makes sense.
Doctor :
and also you will need a prescription for stool softeners
Doctor :
to avoid constipation
Doctor :
and again complications
User :   I was warned that I might need to take some stool softener or a laxative.
Doctor :
report to your doctor about the constipation symptoms due to medications
User :   Okay.
Doctor :
and take the necessary prescription for them
Doctor :
along with the re-examination and possible re-doing of the incision closure
User :   Okay, that doesn't seem to be too hard to do.
User :   Is it anything to worry about for the short term?
Doctor :
short term , no, unless bleding becomes more or profuse
Doctor :
long term, yes, to make sure the incision is closed well and heals well to prevent recurrence of hernia
User :   It doesn't seem to be getting worse as far as I can tell.
User :   It's under the top layer of gauze, not even dark.
User :   The blood that is.
Doctor :   ok

Doctor :
still, to be on safer side i would suggest you to call up the hospital and speak to the 'on-call' surgeon on duty
Doctor :
about the bleed
Doctor :
and if there is any need for you to come to hospital immediately
User :   Okay, that's doable.
Doctor :
or meet your treating surgeon tomorrow morning
Doctor :
and get the re-examination done
User :   That's also doable.
User :   It was an outpatient surgery and I've just had the usual swelling and tenderness besides that.
Doctor :   ok

Doctor :
Is there any thing else I can help you with?
User :   No, I think you've given me some peace of mind.
User :   I was just a bit alarmed at seeing the blood splotch.
Doctor :
ok
User :   I thank you for your time.
Doctor :
ok
