User :   My 29 month old just got over a double ear infection which was treated with azithromycin, ciprodex otic, and as much rest as she would take. We are now 5 days after the bilateratal otitis media was diagnosed and done with the antibiotics but she still seems irritable and has been asking us to turn out the lights in the evenings. No sensitivity to daylight or telivision so, the sudden desire for us to turn out the lights in the evenings has us bewildered. She seems to become quite congested at night when laying down and irritable in the evenings but, she is pretty much, her happy go lucky self in the daytime. What could be going on?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   let me read
Doctor :   is there any discharge from the ear ?
User :   No there didn't appear to be
Doctor :   running nose ?
User :   She does seem congested but, no fluid discharge......unless she starts crying that is.
Doctor :   red eye or watering of eye ?
User :   No, not that I can see. The other night she did start coughing very hard in the middle of the night. It lasted about minute and then she threw up a tiny bit but, she went to sleep right aftewards
Doctor :   is she able to go out in the sun without any discomfort ?
User :   As far as we can tell, yes.
Doctor :   she is not able to tolerate the lights in the evening and night ?
User :   You know, it isn't that she can't tolerate them as much as she just wanted us to turn them off. If we didn't she would throw a fit
User :   She's able to watch the tv from two feet away
Doctor :   ok
User :   Would getting over an ear infection such as this cause her to be irritable and cranky? Or does it have anything to do with the corticosteroid in the ciprodex drops?
Doctor :   it is the infection which is making her irritable and no the medicines used in treating the condition
User :   The infection? She finished her antibiotice regimine
Doctor :   yes the antibiotics are given to treat the infection and post infection it takes some time for some body to settle
Doctor :   there is no active disease process but it takes some time for the diseased part to heal completely
User :   So.........I'm over reacting? My first fear was mininghitis.
Doctor :   you said she throws a fit if the lights aren't put off
User :   Yes. Can bilateral otitis media lead to other conditions?
Doctor :   can you describe the fit ?
User :   Just crying and cranky.
User :   It just seems easier to set her off as of late.
Doctor :   it is not meningitis
Doctor :   but she is irritable because the infection was very much near to the brain
Doctor :   it will settle down
Doctor :   in few days
