Doctor :   hi
Doctor :
how can i help you?
Doctor :
please proceed with your health query
User :   hello ive been noticing lately that my Stool is very dark but not really black just very dark like a dark dark green almost dark grey
User :   and the odor is very potent
Doctor :
ok
Doctor :
since when is this happening?
User :   no matter what i eat it smells the same and it looks the same its very dark though and its been happening for about 3 days
Doctor :
ok
Doctor :
are the stools soft? or hard in consistency?
User :   well its solid i guess
Doctor :
ok
Doctor :
are you having any gastric discomfort?any belching or acidity complaints?
User :   yes alot of belching and chest pain
Doctor :
ok
User :   im on protonix once a day
Doctor :
the foul smell in the stools is indication for a gastrointetinal bleed
Doctor :
typically from the tsomach and upper small intestines
Doctor :
so what is suggested is that #1)you get the stools examined for routine and microscopy along with ocult blood testing
User :   i was only diagnosed with mild acid reflux but lately its been botherin me alot sumtimes i feel like im having a heart attack and i burp all day
Doctor :   #2) Get a endoscopic examination done to look for bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract
User :   i got an endoscopy aboout 1 and a half month ago
Doctor :   #3) go in for a examination and get prescription medications from your PCP for the acid supression
Doctor :
ok
Doctor :
what did the report say?
User :   yea im on protonix
User :   i just have mild acid reflux and biopsy came out good
Doctor :
ok
User :   its like a very dark green color almosst grey
Doctor :
was the dark color stools after the endoscopy or before that?
User :   no its definately recent
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :
then this warrants repeat endoscopy along with the above suggestions
Doctor :
and discuss with your doctor for change in medication form protonix to some alternate one to help you out better
User :   i recently started taking prilosec over the counter once a day too could it be that?
Doctor :
#4) have bland diet. Do not leave stomach empty for more than 3 hours.
Doctor :
it will not be due to the prilosecx, it would be the bleed that is causing it
Doctor :
so the repeat endoscopy will answer that
Doctor :
do not take anything OTC, but consult with your treating doctor and report
Doctor :
back to him if you feel that the prescribed medications are not working
User :   ok i see well wouldnt bleeding make the stool look black?
Doctor :
if the bleeding is severe it will look more blacker
Doctor :
you told me its greenish black which means that the bleeding is happening higher up in the gastrointestinal tract
Doctor :
which is making the gastric acid and other enzymes acting on the blood and breaking it down into the products that give the greenish color
Doctor :   have you followed what i have said?
User :   could it be an ulcer?
Doctor :
yes, it could be a bleeding ulcer which is the most common cause for this
Doctor :
Is there any thing else I can help you with?
User :   are there any other symptoms related to ulcers?
Doctor :
other symptoms include belching, burping, chest discomfort, chest burning, upper stomach discomfort
Doctor :
discomfort or pain before or after having meals
Doctor :
in severe cases upper back pain, stomach pain, and cramps
Doctor :
