User :   I have a nine month old baby who sleeps through the night, about ten hours a night, and takes 2 scheduled naps during the day. About four days ago he has started sleeping excessively during the day, taking naps that last 5-6 hours. He seems tired all the time and even has dark circles under his eyes. He doesn't crawl or babble as much and just seems generally lethargic. He still eats his normal amount and isn't fussy or crying. What could be causing this?
Doctor :   hi
Doctor :
ok
Doctor :
please give me sometime to read through what you have typed
Doctor :
is there any other symptoms that he has apart from being lethargic?
User :   He has been a little congested, but our whole family had been for a few weeks now. He just went for his well baby checkup last week and everything was fine.
Doctor :
is he sleeping well through the night? or is he waking up in between in the night?
Doctor :   i s the congestion still there?
User :   He sleeps through the night and we have actually been having to wake him up in the morning or he will sleep in an extra 2-3 hours
User :   He is still congested
Doctor :   is there a blocked nose that he is having?
User :   I don't think so, the drainage is clear
Doctor :
is he on any medication now for the congestion?
User :   no medications
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :
if he is still having the congestion then that is the reason for his lethargy and excess sleeping.
Doctor :
babies tend to take a little longer time to get out of congestion and fever
Doctor :
and being congested it is difficult for them to breathe well even if there is no blocked nose
Doctor :
so he may not be having a proper sleep with geting disturbed in between
Doctor :
which is causing him to be lethargic and sleeping more during the day
Doctor :
once the congestion is clear he should be fine and back to his normal rhythm.
Doctor :   in case this pattern continues for another 24 hours, he should be taken for re-examination and if indicated, start on some decongestant medication
Doctor :
to be able to sleep well and carry on with his normal activities.
Doctor :   have you followed what i have said?
User :   Yes, thank you
Doctor :
being lethargic and not able to eat well is sign that something is wrong and the child needs attention.
User :   He is eating normally and his sleep doesn't seem to disturbed, is this still related to the congestion?
Doctor :   the fact that he is sleeping excessive and is lethargic tells that he is not having a proper sleep
Doctor :
which is not suffucient for him
User :   Ok, I see.
Doctor :
so sleeping excess and being lethargic
Doctor :
Is there any thing else I can help you with?
User :   I will see how he does tomorrow and take him for a checkup on Wednesday if he does not improve.
User :   Thank you very much
Doctor :
ok. sure. you can also give him
Doctor :
saline nasal drops, one drop in each nostril
Doctor :
before he sleeps and two times a day
Doctor :
to see if congestion is getting better with it and he gets a bit active
User :   Fantastic, I already have those
Doctor :
are you using them for him?
Doctor :
he will need a 'pediatric' one, and not the adult one
User :   No, for my two year old last month
Doctor :
ok
Doctor :
fine then you can use for him too and see if there is any difference, but a proper chest examination and nasal examination would be needed
Doctor :
if he does not improve within 24 hours.
Doctor :
have you followed what i have said?
User :   Yes
