Doctor:Good Afternoon
Doctor:How can I help you?
User:My mother is 52 years old. Of late, she has an irresistible urge to eat uncooked plain rice. She eats it often? Why this sudden attraction towards rice and if she eats a lot of plain uncooked rice, is it a problem?
Doctor:Is she diabetic?
Doctor:Is she taking any medications for any other problems?
User:she has asthma.. she is taking ayurvedic medicine for it
User:It's wheezing not asthma
Doctor:Normally this habit is known as 'Pica'.
Doctor:The problem of having uncooked rice is that, potentially harmful ingredients may be ingested along with the rice.
Doctor:Sometimes, this is seen with certain nutritional deficiencies such as iron.
Doctor:So, the best way is to get examined by your family physician for any deficiencies. She might have to go for some blood tests too.
Doctor:If there is a deficiency, pica gets corrected by correcting the deficiency.
Doctor:There should also be a conscious effort from your mother to avoid eating raw rice.
Doctor:Have you understood what I said till now?
Doctor:Are you there Mr. Praveen?
User:Yes doctor...I'll get her examined by a physician for any deficiency. Do I understand that continued consumption will be problematic for her in the long run?
Doctor:No. There is no much physical harm in having it continuously.
Doctor:Only thing is that raw rice when packed, might be mixed with some preservatives etc.
Doctor:So washing it is much important.
Doctor:And then, the habit is usually just a habit.
Doctor:So it can be corrected by a conscious effort.
Doctor:Have you understood?
User:I get your point. And also the deficiency that originally has caused this should be corrected too..Would eating more rice correct the deficiency?
Doctor:If there is any deficiency, it needs to be corrected by supplements.
Doctor:Hope I have cleared all your doubts.
User:Yes doctor. Thank you!
Doctor:Is there anything else I could help you with?
Doctor:Thanks for consulting me.
Doctor:Have a nice day!!
User:Thank you! bye
Doctor:Bye for now.
