Hi, My wife and I were running and she had to stop because she started to experience a sharp pain in the mid-left of her upper abdomen. This has happened to her before without any physical activity. It causes her pain when she breathes. She also believes that her stomach is swollen. We are thinking of going to see a doctor today, but any helpful ideas you can give as to what is causing this would be appreciated. Thank you Nick

Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :
Let me read it
Doctor :
Ok
Doctor :
May I know a few more details about her?
User :   Yes anything you need to know
Doctor :   Thank you

Doctor :
May I know her age, height and weight?
User :   22, 5'4, 140lbs
Doctor :   Ok

Doctor :
Since when has she seen this problem?
User :   ok so I asked her
User :   She told me that she has had this off and on like a few times a year since she was 18
Doctor :   Ok

Doctor :
Is this evident only after running or any strenous activity?
User :   No sometimes she just gets it.
Doctor :   Ok

Doctor :
Will that subside after rest?
User :   Yes
Doctor :
Ok
Doctor :
Is it seen only in the abdomen?
User :   She actually just told me it doesn't hurt
User :   Upper
User :   she says it feels like her ribs are poking her or something
Doctor :   Ok

User :   Which could honestly just be a sharp pain confused as poking
Doctor :
You mentioned that it is in the mid left abdomen right?
User :   Correct, she had told me it was on the left side, but then I started pressing her stomach and the pain resonated from the mid-left side.
Doctor :
Is it absolutely no in the chest?
User :   No
Doctor :   Fine
Doctor :
Has this been seen in any other area as well?
Doctor :
Like the calf muscles
User :   No
Doctor :
Ok
Doctor :
so going with the history
Doctor :
again one more question
Doctor :
If you press on the area, does the pain increase?
User :   Yes
Doctor :
and do you see any visual changes in the area?
Doctor :
like redness
User :   No redness, she says she feels and sees swelling
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :
Do you see it?
User :   Honestly, no.... but her stomach was a little tight. But I couldn't just be bad a noticing something like that.
Doctor :   Ok

Doctor :   Does she get fever as well when there is pain?
User :   No
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :
Now with the explanation I could get
Doctor :
I can think of a few possibilities
Doctor :
one is Muscular and/or other soft tissue origin
Doctor :
mainly muscular it favors as it does subside quickly
Doctor :   and the next one is an intestinal contraction
Doctor :
mainly the colon
Doctor :
and the third possibility which I could think of is about Renal stone
User :   What exactly is Renal Stone? Forgive my lack of knowledge
Doctor :   It is kidney stone

Doctor :
where in there shall be disturbance caused by it
User :   Her sister had bad kidney stones
Doctor :
and shall cause pain
Doctor :
Ok
User :   and had to have a kidney removed
Doctor :   Ok

Doctor :
It is just a likely one
Doctor :
but in your wife's case
Doctor :
I blame the muscle mainly
User :   Ok that is good to hear from you doctor.
User :   Do you think we should go get it checked out? I would rather hold off if it is not necessary
Doctor :   Sure, it is not of a big concern

Doctor :
Yes, you should get an examination done
Doctor :
and also an ultrasound preferably
Doctor :
Does she have any other problems in appetite, menses, passing stools?
User :   No
Doctor :   Good

User :   She had an ultrasound about 8 months ago
Doctor :
Ok
User :   and nothing came up
Doctor :
Fine
Doctor :
So now muscle comes into picture
Doctor :
Just ask the doctor about hernia?
Doctor :
as she says that she can feel a swelling
User :   Yes
User :   When she tried to suck in her stomach she says it hurts
Doctor :
Just get the above possibilites clarified
Doctor :
during your consultation
Doctor :
I shall list out again for a better comprehension
Doctor :
Muscular, Renal, Colon/Intestinal, Hernia
User :   Ok thank you doctor
Doctor :   Is there any thing else I can help you with?

Doctor :
