It is the liver injury in new borns inwhom the infectious and metabolic disease have been excluded. It is also called as idiopathic neonatal hepatitis. It is charecterized by presence of mulitnucleated gaint cells.

Giant Cell Disease of the Liver

It is also known as congenital liver cirrhosis, giant cell hepatitis, neonatal hepatitis..


This disease occurs in early infancy manifested by jaundice in the second to eight week of life and the course is variable resolving completely in 40 percent of the patients.
In some ther ewill be fibrosisl leading to diffuse portal cirrhosis.The disease is rare.

Investigations

  • Hemogram.
  • Bonemarrow examaintion.
  • Icterus index.
  • Serum bilirubin.
  • Vanden bergh reaction positive.
  • Liver fucntion tests.
  • Liver biopsy showed numerous syncytial gaint cells with granular sytoplasm and chronic inflammatory cells in the portal tract.
