Motion sickness also called kinetosis is a condition with characteristic features of dizziness, fatigue and vomiting which occurs due to perceiving of different signals by eye and vestibular system in the ears seen commonly while travelling in vehicles, airplanes and space ships

 

Any type of transportation can cause motion sickness. It can strike suddenly, progressing from a feeling of uneasiness to a cold sweat, dizziness and then vomiting. Motion sickness usually quiets down as soon as the motion stops. The more you travel, the more easily you'll adjust to being in motion

First aid for motion sickness:

1. You may escape motion sickness by planning ahead. If you're traveling, reserve seats where motion is felt least:

  • By ship, request a cabin in the front or middle of the ship, or on the upper deck
  • By plane, ask for a seat over the front edge of a wing. Once aboard, direct the air vent flow to your face
  • By train, take a seat near the front and next to a window. Face forward
  • By automobile, drive or sit in the front passenger's seat

2. If you're susceptible to motion sickness then:

  • Focus on the horizon or on a distant, stationary object. Don't read
  • Keep your head still, while resting against a seat back
  • Don't smoke or sit near smokers
  • Avoid spicy and greasy foods and alcohol. Don't overeat

3. Sit in the direction of travel not in opposite direction

4. Sit in the front seat of a vehicle which you are travelling

5. Do not read or write while traveling if you have experienced motion sickness before

6. Keep your gaze fixed on the horizon or on a fixed point

7. Open a window or vent or source of fresh air if possible

8. Distraction of the attention while travelling like speaking or looking into something

9. Sit alone and try to discuss about motion sickness and looking into people who are vomiting should be avoided

10. In case of mild cases of motion sickness and before going for small trips over-the-counter medication can be a very effective preventive measure they are

  • Meclizine
  • Bonine
  • Antivert
  • Dramamine

11. In case of long travels patch containing scopolamine a transdermal patch that often is effective in preventing motion sickness

12. Eat dry crackers or drink a carbonated beverage to help settle your stomach if you become ill.
